Captain Sanders reported that the expedition anchored at several points in the ocean to inspect the seabed. The coordinates for these anchor points might be found in the ship's log. Sanders brought the log with him to the hospital, but his last memory is of a surgery ward.

At the final anchor point, scientists discovered cracks on the seabed. A terrible event occurred there, frightening the crew so severely that they mutinied after saving Albert Throgmorton. Much of the expedition was abandoned within the underwater cracks.
