Treasures are Transportable Items that can be found, carried, and sold to Trading Companies in exchange for Currencies, Reputation and Emissary Value.

Mechanics

Treasure is the main source of Gold, Doubloons, Reputation and Emissary Value in Sea of Thieves. Each Trading Company has Representatives at every Outpost who accept Treasures related to their Company for Gold/Doubloons, Reputation and Emissary Value. Outpost Representatives also offer Voyages, which lead Crews on Quests for these Treasure items.

Random Treasure can be found all over The Sea of Thieves, whether hidden or beached on Islands, floating amongst Barrels of Plenty or Shipwrecks, locked behind Vaults in Forts or taken by Skeleton Ships, Megalodons or the Kraken. Every Treasure Item has a colored glint or glow so Players can spot them from afar.

Every Treasure item must be carried by hand to its respective Company Representative. A single Pirate can hold one Treasure Item at a time and cannot fight or use any Equipment or Resource Items while carrying it. The Treasure must be dropped to regain full control. Every Treasure Item can be retrieved with a Harpoon. Most smaller Treasure Items can be placed inside Container Chests to hide their Glow, Glint or Sound. Container Chests can carry up to 3 Small Treasure Items.

Any Treasure left on land will stay there until interacted with again. Treasure dropped in water will sink after about 5 minutes (except Trade Good Crates).

While sailing as Trading Company Emissaries, picking up a relevant Treasure item grants Emissary Grade Reputation. Additional Reputation is given if the items are put on the Ship. These increases are given only when the Crew claims a Treasure item for the first time.

Types of Treasure Items

Treasure items are categorized by the Trading Company that wishes to purchase them. Within the Gold Hoarders, Order of Souls, and Merchant Alliance, Treasure Items are also categorized into Regular, Ashen, Stronghold, or Skeletal and Ghostly variants.

Gold Hoarders Treasure

These Treasure Items can be sold to the Gold Hoarders Trading Company on any Outpost for Gold and Reputation. They yield increased Reward and Reputation as well as Emissary Value when sold as Gold Hoarder Emissaries.

Treasure Chests

Treasure Chests are unbreakable and locked Chests sold to the Gold Hoarders. They can be found as part of Treasure Maps and Riddle Maps, inside Ancient Vaults, or randomly across The Sea of Thieves. Treasure Chests emit a White Glint from a distance.

There are six types of Treasure Chests: Regular, Shipwrecked, Coral, Ashen, Valuable, and Cursed Treasure Chests:

  • Regular Treasure Chests have no distinct qualities.
  • Shipwrecked Treasure Chests are damaged, barnacle-encrusted versions found underwater or in Shipwrecks. They sell for the same amount as regular chests.
  • Coral Treasure Chests are coral-encrusted versions found only in Siren Shrines and Siren Treasuries.
  • Ashen Treasure Chests are molten versions, most commonly found in The Devil's Roar, selling for roughly double the price of regular chests.
  • Valuable Chests are specific to various Encounters on the seas.
  • Cursed Treasure Chests are tied to specific locations or have specific effects and are generally very valuable.

Artefacts

Artefacts are smaller items found on their own, hidden in Treasure Chests, or inside Fortress Vaults. They emit a Golden Glint from a distance.

There are four types of Artefacts:

  • Regular Artefacts are small Trinkets, Containers, or Ornaments made out of valuable metals and gems.
