Learn about Treasure in Sea of Thieves: how it works, where to find it, and the different types of items you can sell to Trading Companies for Gold, Reputation, and Emissary Value.
Treasures are Transportable Items that can be found, carried, and sold to Trading Companies in exchange for Currencies, Reputation, and Emissary Value.
Mechanics
Treasure is the main source of Gold, Doubloons, Reputation, and Emissary Value in Sea of Thieves. Each Trading Company has Representatives at every Outpost who accept Treasures related to their Company for Gold/Doubloons, Reputation, and Emissary Value. Outpost Representatives also offer Voyages, which lead Crews on Quests for these Treasure items.
Random Treasure can be found all over The Sea of Thieves, whether hidden or beached on Islands, floating amongst Barrels of Plenty or Shipwrecks, locked behind Vaults in Forts, or taken by foes like Skeleton Ships, Megalodons, or the Kraken. Every Treasure Item has a colored glint or glow for spotting.
Treasure must be carried by hand to its respective Company Representative for a payout. A single Pirate can hold one Treasure Item at a time and cannot fight or use Equipment or Resource Items while carrying it. The Treasure must be dropped to regain full control. Every Treasure Item can be retrieved with a Harpoon. Smaller Treasure Items can be placed inside Container Chests (which hold up to 3 Small Treasure Items) to hide their emitted Glow, Glint, or Sound.
Any Treasure left on land will stay there until interacted with again. Treasure dropped in water will sink after about 5 minutes (except Trade Good Crates, which stay afloat longer).
While sailing as Trading Company Emissaries, picking up a relevant Treasure item grants Emissary Grade Reputation. Additional Reputation is given if the items are put on the Ship. These increases are given only when a Treasure item is claimed for the first time.
Types of Treasure Items
Treasure items are categorized by the Trading Company that wishes to purchase them. Within the Gold Hoarders, Order of Souls, and Merchant Alliance, Treasure Items are also categorized into Regular, Ashen, Stronghold, or Skeletal and Ghostly variants depending on their source.
Gold Hoarders Treasure
The following are Treasure Items sold to the Gold Hoarders Trading Company for Gold and Reputation. These items yield increased Reward and Reputation, as well as Emissary Value, when sold to Representatives as Gold Hoarder Emissaries.
Treasure Chests
Treasure Chests are unbreakable and locked chests sold to the Gold Hoarders for a margin of their contents. They can be found via Treasure Maps, Riddle Maps, inside Ancient Vaults, or randomly across The Sea of Thieves. Treasure Chests emit a White Glint from a distance.
There are six types of Treasure Chests: Regular, Shipwrecked, Coral, Ashen, Valuable, and Cursed Treasure Chests:
- Regular Treasure Chests have no distinct qualities.
- Shipwrecked Treasure Chests are damaged, barnacle-encrusted versions found underwater or in Shipwrecks. They sell for the same amount as regular chests.
- Coral Treasure Chests are coral-encrusted versions found only in Siren Shrines and Siren Treasuries.
- Ashen Treasure Chests are molten versions, most commonly found in The Devil's Roar, selling for roughly double the price of regular chests.
- Valuable Chests are specific to various Encounters on the seas.
- Cursed Treasure Chests are tied to specific locations or have specific effects and are generally very valuable.
Artefacts
Artefacts are smaller items found on their own, hidden in Treasure Chests, or inside Fortress Vaults. There are four types of Artefacts:
- Regular Artefacts are small Trinkets, Containers, or Ornaments made out of valuable metals and gems. These emit a Golden Glint from a distance.
