Learn how to optimize your loadout in Sea of Thieves by understanding treasure types, their value to trading companies, and effective carrying and delivery strategies. Maximize your gains!

This section focuses on optimizing your loadout by understanding the value and mechanics of treasure in Sea of Thieves. While not directly about equipment loadouts, it details how to best manage and deliver treasure for maximum profit.

Treasure Mechanics

Treasures are the primary source of Gold, Doubloons, Reputation, and Emissary Value in Sea of Thieves. Each Trading Company values specific types of treasure and has representatives at every Outpost. These representatives accept treasures for Gold/Doubloons, Reputation, and Emissary Value. Outpost Representatives also offer Voyages, which are quests leading to treasure items.

Random treasures can be found across the Sea of Thieves, including on islands, floating in barrels or shipwrecks, within Fort vaults, or taken by enemies like Skeleton Ships, Megalodons, or the Kraken. All treasure items emit a colored glint or glow, allowing players to identify their type from a distance.

To get a payout, each treasure item must be carried by hand to its respective Company Representative. A pirate can only carry one treasure item at a time and cannot fight or use equipment/resources while doing so. The treasure must be dropped to regain full control. Most treasure items can be retrieved from afar with a Harpoon. Smaller items can be placed in Container Chests (which hold up to 3 small items) to hide their glow, glint, or sound, making transportation easier.

Treasure left on land remains until interacted with, but treasure dropped in water sinks after about 5 minutes (except for Trade Good Crates, which float longer).

When sailing as a Trading Company Emissary, picking up a relevant treasure item grants Emissary Grade Reputation. This bonus is given only when the crew claims a treasure item for the first time.

Types of Treasure Items

Treasure items are categorized by the Trading Company that purchases them. The three main companies are the Gold Hoarders, the Order of Souls, and the Merchant Alliance. Within these, treasures can also be Regular, Ashen, Stronghold, or Skeletal/Ghostly variants depending on their source.

Gold Hoarders Treasure

These items are sold to the Gold Hoarders for Gold and Reputation. Sailing as a Gold Hoarder Emissary increases rewards and Reputation.

Treasure Chests

Treasure Chests are locked containers sold to the Gold Hoarders. They can be found via Treasure Maps, Riddle Maps, Ancient Vaults, or randomly across the seas. They emit a white glint. Types include:

  • Regular Treasure Chests: Standard chests.
  • Shipwrecked Treasure Chests: Damaged, barnacle-encrusted chests found underwater or in shipwrecks. Sell for the same as regular chests.
  • Coral Treasure Chests: Coral-encrusted chests found in Siren Shrines and Treasuries.
  • Ashen Treasure Chests: Molten chests, primarily found in The Devil's Roar, selling for roughly double the price of regular chests.
  • Valuable Chests: Specific chests found during various Encounters.
  • Cursed Treasure Chests: Chests tied to specific locations or effects, generally very valuable.

Artefacts

Artefacts are smaller items found on their own, inside Treasure Chests, or in Fortress Vaults. They emit a golden glint. Types include:

  • Regular Artefacts: Trinkets, Containers, or Ornaments made of valuable metals and gems.
