Discover how to unlock and earn rewards from all Trading Companies in Sea of Thieves. Learn about treasure types, selling mechanics, and Emissary progression for Gold Hoarders, Order of Souls, and Merchant Alliance.
Treasures are transportable items that can be found, carried, and sold to Trading Companies in exchange for Currencies, Reputation, and Emissary Value. They are the primary source of Gold, Doubloons, Reputation, and Emissary Value in Sea of Thieves.
Each Trading Company values specific types of Treasure Items and has Representatives at every Outpost. These Representatives accept Treasures related to their Company for Gold/Doubloons, Reputation, and Emissary Value. Outpost Representatives also offer Voyages, which lead Crews on Quests to find these Treasure items.
Random Treasure can be found all over The Sea of Thieves, whether hidden or beached on Islands, floating amongst Barrels of Plenty or Shipwrecks, locked behind Vaults in Forts, or taken by enemies like Skeleton Ships, Megalodons, or the Kraken. Every Treasure Item has a colored glint or glow surrounding it for easy spotting from afar.
Treasure items must be carried by hand to their respective Company Representative for a payout. A single Pirate can only hold one Treasure Item at a time and cannot fight or use equipment while carrying it; the item must be dropped to regain full control. Treasures can be retrieved from afar with a Harpoon. Most smaller Treasure Items can be placed inside Container Chests to hide their emitted Glow, Glint, or Sound. Container Chests can carry up to 3 Small Treasure Items, simplifying transportation and delivery.
Any Treasure picked up and left on land will remain there until interacted with again. However, Treasure items dropped in water will sink after approximately 5 minutes (except for Trade Good Crates, which float longer). While sailing as Trading Company Emissaries, picking up a relevant Treasure item grants Emissary Grade Reputation. Additional Reputation is given if these items are placed on the Ship. These reputation increases are awarded only when a Treasure item is claimed for the first time.
Treasure items are categorized by the Trading Company that purchases them for Currencies and Reputation (and Emissary Value if sailing as a Trading Company Emissary). Within the three main companies (The Gold Hoarders, the Order of Souls, and the Merchant Alliance), Treasure Items are further categorized into Regular, Ashen, Stronghold, or Skeletal and Ghostly variants depending on their source.
Gold Hoarders Treasure
The following are Treasure Items that can be sold to the Gold Hoarders Trading Company on any Outpost for Gold and Reputation. These Items yield increased Reward and Reputation, as well as Emissary Value, when sold to the Representatives as Gold Hoarder Emissaries.
Treasure Chests
Treasure Chests are unbreakable and locked chests sold to the Gold Hoarders, who possess the keys to open them for a portion of their valuable contents. Treasure Chests can be found as part of Treasure Maps and Riddle Maps, inside Ancient Vaults, or randomly across The Sea of Thieves. They emit a White Glint from a distance. There are six types of Treasure Chests: Regular, Shipwrecked, Coral, Ashen, Valuable, and Cursed Treasure Chests.
- Regular Treasure Chests have no distinct qualities.
- Shipwrecked Treasure Chests are damaged, barnacle-encrusted versions found underwater or in Shipwrecks. They sell for the same amount as regular chests.
- Coral Treasure Chests are coral-encrusted versions found only in Siren Shrines and Siren Treasuries.
- Ashen Treasure Chests are molten versions, most commonly found in The Devil's Roar, selling for roughly double the price of regular chests.
- Valuable Chests are specific to various Encounters on the seas.
- Cursed Treasure Chests are tied to specific locations or effects and are generally very valuable.
Artefacts
Artefacts are smaller items found on their own, hidden within Treasure Chests throughout The Sea of Thieves, or inside Fortress Vaults. There are four types of Artefacts:
- Regular Artefacts are small Trinkets, Containers, or Ornaments made from valuable metals and gems. They emit a Golden Glint from a distance. They share their pricing tiers with Treasure Chests.
