Master Sea of Thieves treasure hunting! Learn about different treasure types, mechanics, and how to maximize your Gold, Reputation, and Emissary Value with this comprehensive guide.
Treasures are transportable items in Sea of Thieves that can be found, carried, and sold to Trading Companies in exchange for Currencies, Reputation, and Emissary Value.
Mechanics
Treasure is the primary source of Gold, Doubloons, Reputation, and Emissary Value in Sea of Thieves. Each Trading Company values specific treasure types and has representatives at every Outpost who accept these items for rewards. Representatives also offer Voyages, which are quests leading to treasure.
Random treasure can be found across the Sea of Thieves, including on islands, floating in barrels or shipwrecks, within Fort vaults, or taken by enemies like Skeleton Ships, Megalodons, or the Kraken. All treasure items emit a colored glint for easy spotting.
Treasure must be carried by hand to the respective Company Representative for a payout. A pirate can only carry one item at a time and cannot use equipment or resources while doing so. The treasure must be dropped to regain full control. Harpoons can retrieve treasure from afar. Smaller items can be placed in Container Chests, which hold up to 3 items, to hide their glow and simplify transport.
Treasure left on land remains until interacted with. Treasure dropped in water sinks after about 5 minutes, except for Trade Good Crates which float longer. Sailing as a Trading Company Emissary grants Emissary Grade Reputation when picking up relevant treasure, with additional gains when the treasure is claimed and put on the ship. These increases are awarded only on the first claim.
Types of Treasure Items
Treasure items are categorized by the Trading Company that purchases them for Currencies and Reputation (and Emissary Value if sailing as an Emissary). Within the Gold Hoarders, Order of Souls, and Merchant Alliance, treasure is further classified into Regular, Ashen, Stronghold, Skeletal, and Ghostly variants based on their origin.
Gold Hoarders Treasure
The following treasure items can be sold to the Gold Hoarders Trading Company on any Outpost for Gold and Reputation. Selling these items as a Gold Hoarder Emissary yields increased rewards and Emissary Value.
Treasure Chests
Treasure Chests are unbreakable and locked containers sold to the Gold Hoarders, who possess the keys. They are found via Treasure Maps, Riddle Maps, inside Ancient Vaults, or randomly across the Sea of Thieves. Treasure Chests emit a White Glint from a distance. There are six types: Regular, Shipwrecked (damaged, found underwater or in shipwrecks), Coral (found in Siren Shrines and Treasuries), Ashen (molten, found in The Devil's Roar, double the price of regular), Valuable (specific to encounters), and Cursed (tied to specific locations or effects, generally very valuable).
Artefacts
Artefacts are smaller items found individually, within Treasure Chests, or in Fortress Vaults. They emit a Golden Glint from a distance. There are four types, sharing pricing tiers with Treasure Chests.
