Learn about all the different types of treasure in Sea of Thieves, including chests, artifacts, and more. Understand how to find and sell them to trading companies for gold and reputation.

Treasures are transportable items that can be found, carried, and sold to Trading Companies in exchange for Currencies, Reputation, and Emissary Value. They are the primary source of Gold, Doubloons, Reputation, and Emissary Value in Sea of Thieves.

Each Trading Company values specific types of Treasure Items and has representatives at every Outpost. These representatives accept Treasures related to their Company for Gold/Doubloons, Reputation, and Emissary Value. Outpost Representatives also offer Voyages, which lead crews on Quests to find these Treasure items.

Random Treasure can be found all over The Sea of Thieves, whether hidden or beached on Islands, floating amongst Barrels of Plenty or Shipwrecks, locked behind Vaults in Forts, or taken by foes like Skeleton Ships, Megalodons, or the Kraken. Every Treasure Item has a colored glint or glow so players can spot and determine their type from afar.

Treasure items must be carried by hand to their respective Company Representative for a payout. A single Pirate can only hold one Treasure Item at a time and cannot fight or use equipment while carrying it. The Treasure must be dropped to regain full control. Most smaller Treasure Items can be placed inside Container Chests, which can hold up to 3 Small Treasure Items, making transportation and delivery easier.

Any Treasure left on land will stay there, but Treasure dropped in water will sink after about 5 minutes (except for Trade Good Crates). While sailing as Trading Company Emissaries, picking up a relevant Treasure item grants Emissary Grade Reputation, with additional Reputation if placed on the ship. These increases are given only when a Treasure item is claimed for the first time.

Treasure items are categorized by the Trading Company that wishes to purchase them. Within the three main companies (The Gold Hoarders, the Order of Souls, and the Merchant Alliance), Treasure Items are further categorized into Regular, Ashen, Stronghold, or Skeletal and Ghostly variants depending on their source.

Gold Hoarders Treasure

The following Treasure Items can be sold to the Gold Hoarders Trading Company on any Outpost for Gold and Reputation. These items yield increased Reward and Reputation, as well as Emissary Value, when sold to Representatives as Gold Hoarder Emissaries.

Treasure Chests

Treasure Chests are unbreakable and locked containers sold to the Gold Hoarders. They can be found as part of Treasure Maps and Riddle Maps, inside Ancient Vaults, or randomly across The Sea of Thieves. Treasure Chests emit a White Glint from a distance. There are six types: Regular, Shipwrecked (damaged, barnacle-encrusted, found underwater or in Shipwrecks), Coral (found in Siren Shrines and Treasuries), Ashen (molten, found in The Devil's Roar, sell for double), Valuable (specific to various Encounters), and Cursed (tied to specific locations or effects, generally very valuable).

Artefacts

Artefacts are smaller items found on their own, hidden in Treasure Chests, or inside Fortress Vaults. They emit a Golden Glint from a distance. There are four types: Regular Artefacts (small Trinkets, Containers, or Ornaments made of valuable metals and gems).
