Discover all types of treasure in Sea of Thieves, from chests to artifacts. Learn how to find, transport, and sell them to Trading Companies for Gold, Reputation, and Emissary Value.

Treasures are transportable items in Sea of Thieves that can be found, carried, and sold to Trading Companies. Selling treasure earns you Currencies, Reputation, and Emissary Value. Treasure is the primary source of Gold, Doubloons, Reputation, and Emissary Value in the game.

Each Trading Company values specific types of Treasure Items and has representatives at every Outpost. These representatives accept all treasures related to their Company for Gold/Doubloons, Reputation, and Emissary Value. Outpost Representatives also offer Voyages, which lead crews on Quests to find these Treasure items.

Besides dedicated Voyages, random Treasure can be found all over The Sea of Thieves. It can be hidden or beached on Islands, floating amongst Barrels of Plenty or Shipwrecks, locked behind Vaults in Forts, or taken by enemies like Skeleton Ships, Megalodons, or the Kraken. Every Treasure Item has a colored glint or glow, allowing players to spot and identify them from afar.

Every Treasure item must be carried by hand to its respective Company Representative for a payout. A pirate can only hold one Treasure Item at a time and cannot fight or use any Equipment or Resource Items while carrying it. The treasure must be dropped to regain full control. Most smaller Treasure Items can be placed inside Container Chests, which can hold up to 3 items, to hide their emitted Glow, Glint, or Sound, making transportation easier. Any Treasure left on land will remain there until interacted with again, but treasure dropped in water will sink after about 5 minutes (except for Trade Good Crates). Sailing as Trading Company Emissaries grants Emissary Grade Reputation when picking up relevant Treasure items, with additional Reputation for placing them on the ship.

Types of Treasure Items

Treasure items are categorized by the Trading Company that wishes to purchase them. Within the three main companies (The Gold Hoarders, the Order of Souls, and the Merchant Alliance), Treasure Items are further categorized into Regular, Ashen, Stronghold, or Skeletal and Ghostly variants depending on their source.

Gold Hoarders Treasure

The following are Treasure Items that can be sold to the Gold Hoarders Trading Company on any Outpost for Gold and Reputation. These items yield increased Reward and Reputation, as well as Emissary Value, when sold to Representatives as Gold Hoarder Emissaries.

Treasure Chests

Treasure Chests are unbreakable and locked chests sold to the Gold Hoarders. They can be found as part of Treasure Maps and Riddle Maps, inside Ancient Vaults, or randomly across The Sea of Thieves. Treasure Chests emit a White Glint from a distance. There are six types:

  • Regular Treasure Chests: Have no distinct qualities.
  • Shipwrecked Treasure Chests: Damaged, barnacle-encrusted versions found underwater or in Shipwrecks. They sell for the same amount as regular chests.
  • Coral Treasure Chests: Coral-encrusted versions found only in Siren Shrines and Siren Treasuries.
  • Ashen Treasure Chests: Molten versions most commonly found in The Devil's Roar, selling for roughly double the price of regular chests.
  • Valuable Chests: Chests specific to various Encounters on the seas.
  • Cursed Treasure Chests: Tied to specific locations or effects, generally very valuable.

Artefacts

Artefacts are smaller items found on their own, hidden in Treasure Chests, or inside Fortress Vaults. They emit a Golden Glint from a distance. There are four types:

  • Regular Artefacts: Small Trinkets, Containers, or Ornaments made of valuable metals and gems.
