Learn about all types of treasure in Sea of Thieves, including chests and artifacts. Understand how treasure mechanics work, from finding to selling for Gold and Reputation.
Walkthrough
- 1Finding Treasure: Treasure can be found on islands, floating in barrels or shipwrecks, within fort vaults, or taken from enemies like Skeleton Ships, Megalodons, and the Kraken. Each treasure item emits a distinct colored glint or glow.
- 2Carrying Treasure: Treasure must be carried by hand to a Trading Company representative. While carrying treasure, a pirate cannot fight or use equipment. Dropping the treasure allows for full control. Harpoons can retrieve treasure from a distance. Smaller items can be placed in Container Chests, which hold up to 3 items and hide their glow.
- 3Treasure Persistence: Treasure left on land remains until interacted with. Treasure dropped in water sinks after approximately 5 minutes, except for Trade Good Crates which float longer.
- 4Emissary Value: Sailing as a Trading Company Emissary grants Emissary Grade Reputation when picking up relevant treasure. Additional reputation is gained when the treasure is put on the ship. These increases are awarded only on the first claim of a treasure item.
- 5Trading Companies: Each Trading Company values specific types of treasure. Representatives are found at every Outpost and accept treasure for Gold, Doubloons, Reputation, and Emissary Value. They also offer Voyages that lead to treasure.
- 6Types of Treasure: Treasure items are categorized by the Trading Company they are sold to. The three main companies are the Gold Hoarders, Order of Souls, and Merchant Alliance. Within these, treasures can be Regular, Ashen, Stronghold, Skeletal, or Ghostly variants.
- 7Gold Hoarders Treasure: This includes Treasure Chests and Artefacts.
- 8Treasure Chests: These are locked chests sold to the Gold Hoarders. Types include Regular, Shipwrecked, Coral, Ashen (found in The Devil's Roar, worth double), Valuable, and Cursed Chests. They emit a white glint.
- 9Artefacts: Smaller items like trinkets, containers, or ornaments made of valuable metals and gems. They emit a golden glint and are found on their own, in chests, or in fortress vaults.
Tips
- Use Container Chests to transport multiple small treasures and hide their glow.
- Harpoons are useful for retrieving treasure from a distance.
- Be aware that carrying treasure restricts your ability to fight or use equipment.
