Discover the mechanics of treasure in Sea of Thieves. Learn about different treasure types, how to find them, and their value to Trading Companies like the Gold Hoarders.

Walkthrough
  1. 1
Finding Treasure: Treasure can be found randomly on islands, beached, floating in barrels or shipwrecks, within vaults in forts, or taken by enemies like Skeleton Ships, Megalodons, and the Kraken. Treasure items emit a distinct colored glint or glow, allowing players to identify them from a distance.
  2. 2
Carrying Treasure: Treasure must be carried by hand to a Trading Company representative. While carrying treasure, a pirate cannot fight or use equipment/resource items. The treasure must be dropped to regain full control. Harpoons can be used to retrieve treasure from afar. Smaller items can be placed in Container Chests (holding up to 3 items) to hide their glow and simplify transport.
  3. 3
Treasure Lifespan: Treasure left on land remains until interacted with. Treasure dropped in water sinks after approximately 5 minutes, with the exception of Trade Good Crates which float longer.
  4. 4
Emissary Value: Sailing as a Trading Company Emissary and picking up relevant treasure grants Emissary Grade Reputation. Additional Reputation is gained when the treasure is placed on the ship. These bonuses are awarded only upon the first claim of a treasure item.
  5. 5
Trading Companies: Each Trading Company (Gold Hoarders, Order of Souls, Merchant Alliance) values specific treasure types and has representatives at every Outpost. Delivering treasure grants Gold, Doubloons, Reputation, and Emissary Value.
  6. 6
Types of Treasure: Treasure items are categorized by the Trading Company they belong to. Within the main companies, treasures can be Regular, Ashen, Stronghold, Skeletal, or Ghostly variants.
  7. 7
Gold Hoarders Treasure: Items sold to the Gold Hoarders include Treasure Chests and Artefacts.
  8. 8
Treasure Chests: These are locked chests sold to the Gold Hoarders. They can be found via Treasure Maps, Riddle Maps, Ancient Vaults, or randomly. They emit a White Glint. Types include Regular, Shipwrecked, Coral, Ashen (found in The Devil's Roar, sell for double), Valuable, and Cursed Treasure Chests.
  9. 9
Artefacts: Smaller items found on their own, in chests, or in fortress vaults. They emit a Golden Glint. Types include Regular Artefacts (trinkets, containers, ornaments).
