Skills are a way to interact with the world outside of combat in Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous. They are driven off various attributes, and different classes have differing access, some classes being skilled, others not so. Some classes are inherently more suited to various skills – these are 'class skills'. Investing a point in a class skill grants a one-off +3 bonus to checks against that skill. You additionally apply relevant attribute modifiers to skill checks. For example, 14 Charisma will add +2 to Persuasion checks while 8 Charisma will impose a -1 penalty.
High Intelligence grants bonus skills equal to one point per two character levels for each point of Intelligence bonus. This means that a character with 12 Intelligence would gain a bonus skill point on each odd-numbered level while one with 14 Intelligence would gain a point on every level (and 18 Intelligence would grant two extra skill points per character level). The 'Skilled' trait of humans and half-orcs is equivalent to +4 Intelligence for most builds where Intelligence isn't a primary class attribute.
The following table shows the skills and which attributes they're driven off (note that Constitution is not used in skill checks):
- Athletics (STR): Climbing, swimming, removing obstacles
- Mobility (DEX): Acrobatic feats, movement
- Trickery (DEX): Opening chests, removing traps
- Stealth (DEX): Hiding from opponents, camouflaging your camp, avoiding random encounters
- Knowledge (Arcana) (INT): Magical knowledge, identifying items
- Knowledge (World) (INT): Political knowledge, cookery
- Lore (Nature) (WIS): Natural knowledge, survival
- Lore (Religion) (WIS): Religious knowledge, avoiding Abyssal Corruption
- Perception (WIS): Spotting hidden items, spotting traps, guarding camp
- Persuasion (CHA): Diplomacy, intimidation, bluffing
- Use Magic Device (CHA): Using wands and scrolls
Knowledge skills have a secondary role for analysing enemies: Knowledge (World) is used for humanoid enemies, Lore (Nature) for beasts and magical beasts, Knowledge (Arcana) for outsiders, constructs and the like, and Lore (Religion) for undead.
Persuasion is extremely important to the player character, and Perception is useful on all party members (since each party member makes a separate Perception check). Athletics and Mobility are important for frontline characters but not so important for casters or ranged attackers. You will always want all other skills covered by your party.
- Three ranks in Mobility gives you an extra point of AC (Armor Class) when fighting defensively. This is useful for most characters.
