Detailed Abilities
Cavalier Proficiencies
Cavaliers are proficient with all simple and martial weapons, and all types of armor and shields, with the exception of tower shields.
Order
Cavaliers can join one of five Orders, which function as subclasses: Order of the Cockatrice, Order of the Lion, Order of the Shroud, Order of the Star, or Order of the Sword. Each Order provides unique benefits and abilities.
Tactician
As a standard action, a Cavalier can grant a teamwork feat to allies within 30 feet. This bonus lasts for 3 rounds plus 1 round for every two class levels. This ability can be used an additional time at 5th level and every 5 levels thereafter, up to 5 times at level 20.
Animal Companion
Cavaliers receive a mount, typically a horse, as their Animal Companion.
Challenge
Once per day, a Cavalier can issue a Challenge as a swift action. While challenging a target, the Cavalier's melee attacks deal additional damage equal to their class level. However, they suffer a -2 penalty to AC against attacks from enemies other than the challenge target. This ability can be used once per day, plus an additional time for every three class levels beyond 1st (up to 7 times at 19th level). Specific Orders may add further effects to the Challenge.
Tactician - Bonus Feat
At levels 1, 9, and 17, Cavaliers gain a bonus teamwork feat, provided they meet any prerequisites.
Cavalier's Charge
At 3rd level, when mounted, Cavaliers gain a +4 bonus on melee attack rolls when charging. They also do not suffer any AC penalty when charging.
Banner
Starting at 5th level, the Cavalier's banner provides a +1 morale bonus to charge attacks and a +2 morale bonus to saves against fear for allies within 60 feet. These bonuses increase by +1 at level 10 and every five levels thereafter, reaching a maximum of +4 to charge attacks and +5 to saves against fear at level 20.
Bonus Feat
At levels 6, 12, and 18, Cavaliers gain a bonus combat feat, provided they meet any prerequisites.
Greater Tactician
At 9th level, using the Tactician ability becomes a swift action instead of a standard action.
Mighty Charge
At 11th level, when mounted and charging, the threat range of the Cavalier's weapons is doubled. If the charge attack is successful, the Cavalier automatically makes a free bull rush and trip attempt.
Note: The increased threat range does not stack with properties like Keen or Improved Critical.
Demanding Challenge
The target of a Cavalier's challenge receives a -2 penalty to AC against attacks from anyone other than the Cavalier who issued the challenge.
Greater Banner
At 14th level, the Cavalier's banner also grants a +2 morale bonus to saving throws against charm and compulsion effects.
Supreme Charge
At 20th level, a Cavalier's mounted charge attack deals double damage. If a critical hit is confirmed, the target is stunned for 1d4 rounds. A successful Will save (DC = 10 + Cavalier's BAB) reduces this to being staggered for 1d4 rounds.
Note: This ability interacts with damage multipliers in a way that can lead to very high damage numbers. The wording suggests it doubles total damage rather than just weapon damage.
Cavalier Orders
Order of the Cockatrice
Members of the Order of the Cockatrice are primarily focused on personal glory rather than the greater good. Their progression includes abilities like Braggart and Steal Glory.
