Beginner Guide: Everything You Need to Know

Learn Crimson Desert's gear-based progression, Abyss Artifacts, and Observation Learning. Master combat combos, weapon swaps, and parries.

Crimson Desert features a gear-based progression system, not experience points. Your strength relies on your equipment. To unlock new abilities, you collect Abyss Artifacts (skill points) from dungeons, puzzles, bosses, and combat meter completion. Spend Artifacts in the three-branch skill tree: Blue (Stamina) for combat, Green (Spirit) for counters/mobility, and Red (Health) for elemental powers/flight. Observation Learning allows you to permanently unlock enemy/NPC techniques by observing them for two seconds and spending an artifact.

Combat chains weapon skills with hand-to-hand strikes, grapples, and kicks. Mid-combat weapon swapping between Sword and Shield, Spear, or Greatsword is possible within a single combo. Managing your Stamina gauge is crucial. Bosses adapt their patterns mid-fight. Use the Parry (Green tree) to deflect attacks and immediately Counter for bonus damage.

Your first priority upon reaching Hernand is the 'Restore the Greymane Camp' quest. This establishes your upgradeable base, unlocking the Alchemy Lab, cooking station, farming plots, and blacksmith. These life skills produce essential consumables like the Attack Speed Potion (+30% attack speed) and Spirit Gauge Restore potion.

Tips
  • Tame a horse at Deepfog Basin early; horses are your primary transport and have unique stats.
  • Rescue Hubert for free healing services at your camp.
  • Invest early Abyss Artifacts in the Blue tree's Grapple branch for crowd control.
  • Observe Matthias during your first duel to learn the Kick ability.
  • Blunt weapons (Hammer, Unarmed) are effective against undead enemies.
  • Liberate strongholds like Roothold to unlock merchants and fast travel points.
  • Focus on the main story until reaching Greymane Camp to unlock side content efficiently.
  • Rely on campfires and your camp's Infirmary for free healing instead of buying expensive potions.
  • Use the Foraging skill to gather herbs for crafting healing salves.
  • Make a habit of observing every new enemy type for permanent skill acquisition.

The main story follows Kliff Macduff rebuilding the Greymanes, liberating Pailune from Myurdin's Black Bears faction, and confronting Myurdin. The journey spans five regions: Hernand, Pailune, Demeniss, Delesyia, and the Crimson Desert. Expect 50-80 hours for the main story.

Documents and letters are safe to discard after reading; they are recorded in your journal. Quest items with a special icon cannot be discarded. The main story directs you to Pailune first, which introduces liberation and companion recruitment mechanics. Demeniss follows, featuring political storylines. Going to Demeniss first may result in being underleveled.
