Romance Astarion in Baldur's Gate 3: Good & Evil Paths

It’s difficult to miss the opportunity to recruit Astarion if you fully explore the region around the crash site of the Nautiloid during the first stages of Act 1, but if for any reason you slipped by without noticing him, be sure to check our How to Recruit Astarion in Baldur’s Gate 3 page for all the details. You’ll want to recruit him early on in your playthrough so that he can begin to react to your actions, which will influence his approval rating and make it more likely that you can romance him during Act 1.

Walkthrough

Build Approval: Astarion's approval can be built by playing selfishly and ruthlessly, or by sticking to your preferred morality with compromises.

The "Bad" Path: Prioritize your interests, be violent, show power (including Illithid powers), intimidate, lie, cheat, and fight before compromising. Avoid goading Astarion, support his desire for power, and don't negatively comment on his condition. Siding with goblins over Tieflings at Emerald Grove increases approval.

The "Good" Path: Side with Astarion when he expresses a preference, kill some enemies instead of resolving conflicts with words (e.g., bandits at Overgrown Ruins). To romance him early while remaining good, complete other Act 1 content before dealing with the Tiefling/goblin conflict. After defeating the goblins and saving the Tieflings, speak with Astarion at your camp celebration.

Goblin Camp Interaction: In the goblin camp, accepting Abdirak's request to worship Loviatar in a unique way will substantially improve your relationship with Astarion.

First Romance Scene (Act 1 Camp Party): After saving the Emerald Grove (or partying with the cult of the Absolute if you've been evil), specific dialogue choices are needed:
- Astarion: “I hate it. This is awful.” Reply: “It’s not that bad. Think of all the goblins you killed.”

Astarion: “Still, I would’ve liked more for my trouble than a pat on the head and vinegar for wine.” Reply: “True. The goblins would have thrown a wilder party.”

Astarion: “I’m just looking for a little more excitement. A little more fun.” Reply: “And what’s your idea of ‘a little fun’?”

Astarion: “Let’s wait until things quieten down. Once the others are asleep, we’ll find each other.” Reply: “All right, let’s do it. I’ll see you later.”

Initiate Romance: After the dialogue, go to sleep in your camp to trigger the first romance scene with Astarion.
