Master Regongar's build in Pathfinder: Kingmaker! Learn the best feats, spells, and class choices to maximize his Strength and Charisma for front-line combat and powerful magic.
Hey there! So you're looking to get Regongar set up right, huh? He's a fantastic companion in Pathfinder: Kingmaker, and with the right build, he can be an absolute powerhouse. He starts off as a Magus (Eldritch Scion), which is already a super versatile class that uses Charisma for spells, kind of like a Sorcerer. Plus, he's got a naturally high Strength, making him a solid contender in melee combat. This combo lets him buff himself up for defense while still putting out some serious damage.
Now, Regongar does have a couple of quirks. He's Chaotic Evil, which means we can't use some common tricks like dipping into Monk (Scaled Fist) for extra Armor Class or Paladin for Smite Evil and Divine Grace bonuses. His Constitution and Dexterity aren't the highest either, and his starting feat, Combat Casting, isn't the most exciting. But don't worry, his starting spells are pretty good, and his skills are actually what we'd want to pick for a Magus anyway.
Overall, Regongar can totally fill a tank-like role, and he'll benefit from the same core abilities as any front-liner: Fighting Defensively, Crane Style, Crane Wing, Outflank, Dazzling Display, and Shatter Defenses. While he might not outshine a Magus you create yourself, he's honestly a better pick than the Off-Tank companion if you're cool with having an evil party member.
There are a few ways to really make Regongar shine, but the core idea stays the same. The simplest route is to just keep him as a Magus all the way through – he'll do just fine. However, it feels like a missed opportunity not to grab four levels of Dragon Disciple to really pump up his Strength. He doesn't need more than fifteen Magus levels; he can't even use the _Dragonkind II_ spell his bloodline grants, but the +3 Dodge Bonus to AC at level 15 is too good to pass up. That leaves one level free, and a great way to use it is to dip into Alchemist (Vivisectionist) for some Sneak Attack damage and a Mutagen boost.
Another option is to add levels of Eldritch Knight. You'll need to get his Knowledge (Arcana) up to rank 5 to qualify for it. This keeps his Magus spell progression going and gives him a better Attack Bonus growth. Personally, though, I prefer the class abilities from Magus and Dragon Disciple – the Magus boosts damage with Arcane Weapon Enhancement, and Dragon Disciple gives that sweet Strength bonus after four levels.
