How to Beat Midgardsormr

Midgardsormr is the boss of Chapter 2 and must be defeated to reach the Mythril Mines. It is weak to ice.

Strategy 1: Blizzard Spam - Pelt Midgardsormr with Blizzard/Blizzara. Using actual Ice Materia consumes MP. Alternatively, use the Snow Flurry ability from character Folios to cast Blizzard without expending MP, but this won't earn synergy. This strategy may struggle to pressure the boss. Cloud, Tifa, and Aerith are a good party combination.

Strategy 2: Synergy Spam - This is a less risky, less MP-intensive approach. Spam attacks to fill ATB, block and dodge, then use abilities like Focused Thrust or Unbridled Strength to build synergy. Use Synergy Abilities like Cloud + Tifa's Synchro Cyclone to pressure Midgardsormr. Follow up with stagger-boosting attacks.

Even if Synergy Spam doesn't go perfectly, abilities used still contribute to stagger and health depletion. Synchro Cyclone allows for MP-free Cura afterwards.

Cloud, Tifa, and Barret are recommended for Synergy Spam (Red XIII is a fine substitute for Barret). Ensure everyone has Healing Materia (ideally Lv2). Cloud and Barret benefit from Precision Defense Focus Materia and/or Steadfast Block Materia. Cloud's Bullet Batter Synergy Skill is useful for ranged attacks while building ATB for himself and Barret.

Ride a chocobo into the swamp as far south as possible until you reach an island.

Midgardsormr is a three-phase boss. Phase 1 lasts until its HP is around 80%. It primarily uses physical attacks like Bite, Headbutt, Snap, and Chomp, dealing 150-200 damage. Stick to your tanks and block these attacks. Build ATB and spam abilities to gain synergy for Synergy Abilities.

Watch out for its Toxic Waters attack, which can inflict the Deprotect debuff.
