Struggling with Rufus in FF7 Rebirth? This guide breaks down his attacks, stagger windows, and strategies for both Normal and Hard Mode. Learn how to defeat him!

Rufus is a tough boss in Chapter 12 of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, fought in the Musclehead Colosseum. You'll face him alone as Cloud at first, but don't worry, we'll get you through this. ## Battle Strategy Rufus is quick and loves to counter if you're not careful. He'll often reload after about 6 gunshots, and this is your window to strike. Keep an eye on his attacks; if you can perfect parry or dodge his 6th shot, you can often land a Braver "Braver (VII Rebirth)") to stagger him, or a Triple Slash "Triple Slash (VII Rebirth)") for a faster hit. Key things to watch for: * Reloads: He usually reloads after 6 shots. Interrupting this is key. * Dashes: When he dashes, you can slow down time with the command window to see if he's about to shoot his shotgun. If there's no red indicator above his head, you can block to perfect-block. * Red Attacks: If you see a red ability name above his head, use Triple Slash "Triple Slash (VII Rebirth)") to interrupt him. Timing is crucial here – try to hit him just as the name appears. Using Steadfast Block Materia "Steadfast Block Materia (VII Rebirth)") and dodging his unblockable attacks while blocking his regular ones can build your ATB quickly. This ATB can be used for healing, Focused Thrust "Focused Thrust (VII Rebirth)") (which pressures him), or Triple Slash "Triple Slash (VII Rebirth)"). If he's too far when he reloads, [Sonic Boom](https://finalfantasy.fandom.com/wiki/Sonic_Boom "Sonic Boom") is a good alternative. Consider linking Enemy Skill Materia "Enemy Skill Materia (VII Rebirth)") with HP Absorption Materia "HP Absorption Materia (VII Rebirth)") for some extra survivability, especially on Hard Mode. When Darkstar "Darkstar (VII Rebirth)") joins the fight, focus on avoiding Rufus and dealing with Darkstar. You can block Darkstar's attacks in Punisher Mode "Punisher Mode (VII Rebirth)") and counter with Focused Thrust "Focused Thrust (VII Rebirth)") or Braver "Braver (VII Rebirth)") to stagger it. Summoning [Bahamut Arisen](https://finalfantasy.fandom.com/wiki/Bahamut_Arisen "Bahamut Arisen") can also help turn the tide. Use Cloud's limit break "Limit (VII Rebirth)") to finish off Darkstar or, if you're confident in your damage output, to take down Rufus directly. ## Hard Mode On Hard Mode, Rufus reloads after 8 shots instead of 6, and he might reload even sooner or use a "retreat shot" to create distance. This makes interrupting his reloads a bit trickier. To mitigate damage, you can link Elemental Materia "Elemental Materia (VII Rebirth)") to [Fire and Ice Materia](https://finalfantasy.fandom.com/wiki/Fire_and_Ice_Materia "Fire and Ice Materia") in your armor. If leveled up enough, this can absorb fire damage from his "Think Fast" and ice damage from "Blizzard Shot."
