Miroku is the Japanese name for Maitreya, who is considered the "future Buddha" in Mahayana Buddhism. According to belief, Miroku will appear in the universe 5 billion, 670 million years after Gautama Buddha, the historical Buddha who lived in the 6th century BCE, achieved enlightenment and entered Nirvana. This differs from some traditions where Maitreya is said to return 5000 years after Gautama's death.
