Kagutsuchi is the extraordinarily short-lived Japanese god of fire. According to Japanese legend, he was the son of Izanami and Izanagi, actually born of Izanami's womb (whereas other gods were born from eye washing, etc.). Being the god of fire, Kagutsuchi burned his mother to death when exiting the birth canal. In his rage, Izanagi immediately drew his sword and chopped the hapless god to pieces. Each of his pieces gave birth to new gods, and his blood turned into Futsu-nushi, the god of swords, when it dripped off of Izanagi's sword onto the ground. Ergo, Kagutsuchi was often revered by swordsmiths.
