Plunder in the Sunken Ship

Grab the 'Plunder in the Sunken Ship' Power Star in Super Mario 64! Learn how to lure out the Unagi eel and open chests in the right order to reach the star.

Alright, so you've just entered the Jolly Roger Bay level in Super Mario 64, and you'll find yourself on the shore of a pretty big lake. This star is all about diving in and doing some underwater exploring!

First things first, remember that your health bar doubles as your breath meter when you're underwater. If you need to top up your health or air, just grab some coins or swim back to the surface. For this star, jump straight into the water and swim straight out from where you start. Keep going until you reach the really deep part of the stage.

Once you're down there, you'll spot a sunken ship – that's your main destination. Take a closer look, and you'll see a head poking out of the ship. That's the Unagi, and you need to get it to move so you can get into its hiding spot. The trick is to get really close to it, ideally right underneath, and then quickly swim away. You might want to swim back to the surface to get some air while you're at it. If you do this right, when you dive back down, the Unagi will be swimming around the ship, clearing the way for you to enter the hole it was in. Swim inside that hole, and you'll find yourself in the sunken ship, which is also completely flooded.

Inside the ship, you'll notice some chests right away. These are super important for getting the Power Star, but you absolutely have to open them in the correct sequence. If you pick the wrong one, you'll get zapped and lose some health, so be careful! Open the right chest, though, and it'll release an air bubble, giving you a chance to replenish your health.

Here's the order for the chests: Facing the other end of the ship, open the chest that's farthest from the others first (the one against the wall). Then, open the chest on the left, followed by the one on the right. Finally, open the one in the middle. As soon as you open that last correct chest, the water level inside the sunken ship will start to drop. The Power Star you're looking for is in that yellow box waiting at the top of the newly formed slope. You'll need to use the platforms that appear to climb your way up and grab your prize!
