Learn about the different portal rarity levels and colors in Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon's Ultra Warp Ride. Discover how distance affects portal chances and shiny rates.

Not all portals in Ultra Space are equal. This guide explains the different rarity levels of portals encountered during the Ultra Warp Ride in Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, and how they affect your chances of finding rare Pokémon, including Legendaries and Shinies.

While rarer portals increase the likelihood of encountering something good, they do not guarantee rarer Pokémon or Legendaries.

Portal Rarity Levels

There are four rarity tiers for portals:

  • Tier 1: The basic wormhole. Very low chance of Legendary Pokémon.
  • Tier 2: Wormhole surrounded by a single golden ring. Better than Tier 1, but further travel is recommended.
  • Tier 3: Wormhole surrounded by two golden rings.
  • Tier 4: Wormhole surrounded by two golden rings and a flower-shaped aura. Offers the best chance of finding Legendary Pokémon.

The rarity of portals encountered is influenced by the distance traveled in Ultra Space. The further you travel, the higher the chance of encountering higher-tier portals.

Portal Rarity by Distance

Distance (Light Years) Tier 1 (%) Tier 2 (%) Tier 3 (%) Tier 4 (%)
0 100% 0% 0% 0%
1,000 78% 20% 2% 0%
1,500 66% 30% 4% 0%
2,000 52% 40% 8% 0%
2,500 33% 50% 16% 1%
3,000 32% 50% 16% 2%
3,500 31% 50% 16% 3%
4,000 30% 50% 16% 4%
4,500+ 29% 50% 16% 5%

Portal Colors

The color of an Ultra Wormhole indicates the pool of Pokémon that can be found within. Aiming for a specific Legendary Pokémon requires targeting a particular portal color.

  • White: Always leads to Ultra Beasts. The specific Ultra Beast encountered is random.
  • Blue, Red, Green, Yellow: Lead to different Ultra Space Wilds locales (waterfall, cliffside, meadow, cave). These areas can house Pokémon not found in Alola or Legendary Pokémon.

Shiny Pokémon Chances

Ultra Warp Ride is an excellent method for finding Shiny Pokémon. The shiny rate increases with the distance traveled. At its maximum distance (5,000+ Light Years), there is a 36% chance of encountering a shiny Pokémon.

Shiny Rate by Distance

Distance (Light Years) Shiny Rate (%)
0 1%
1,000 2%
1,500 3%
2,000 4%
2,500 5%
3,000 6%
3,500 7%
4,000 8%
4,500 9%
5,000+ 10%

Note: The shiny rates provided above are for non-Ultra Beast and non-Legendary Pokémon. If a shiny non-Legendary/non-Ultra Beast Pokémon is encountered, its nature and IVs can be soft-resetted while it remains shiny. Legendary Pokémon and Ultra Beasts do not have this lock, allowing for normal soft-resetting for shininess.
