Learn how to make Smeargle sketch any move in Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon. This guide covers using wild Smeargle, Adrenaline Orbs, and False Swipe for effective move copying.

In Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, you cannot intentionally trigger a Double Battle to have your Smeargle sketch a move from your own Pokémon. Instead, you must rely on wild Smeargle. This process can seem complex, but it's manageable with the right approach.

Walkthrough
  1. 1
Obtain a male Smeargle by catching one on Route 2. Ensure your Smeargle knows the move Sketch. It learns Sketch at every multiple of 11 levels, or you can teach it via the Move Tutor in the Pokémon Center on Mount Lanakila.
  2. 2
Return to Route 2. Lead with the Pokémon that knows the move you wish to sketch, with your Smeargle in the back.
  3. 3
For status moves (excluding Sleep) or weak offensive moves: Use the move on the wild Smeargle. Once the wild Smeargle copies it, switch in your Smeargle and have it Sketch the move from the wild Smeargle.
  4. 4
For stronger offensive moves: First, use False Swipe on the wild Smeargle to lower its HP, encouraging it to Sketch False Swipe. Then, switch in your Pokémon with the desired move. Use an Adrenaline Orb to increase the chance of the wild Smeargle calling for backup.
  5. 5
If a second wild Smeargle appears, KO the weakened one with the move you intend to sketch. The newly summoned Smeargle will then copy your move. Switch in your Smeargle to Sketch this move. Ensure your Smeargle is strong enough to withstand the opponent's attacks, perhaps by training it through the Elite Four or Chansey chaining.
  6. 6
If a wild Smeargle appears after using False Swipe but before switching your Pokémon, KO the newly appeared Smeargle.
  7. 7
If you don't plan to teach your Smeargle multiple moves or if this is its first move, you can capture the wild Smeargle after it has Sketched your desired move.
  8. 8
Moves that hit multiple targets are extremely difficult to Sketch, but powerful moves like Surf and Earthquake are available as TMs.
  9. 9
An alternative method is to find a wild Pokémon that already knows the move you want and have your Smeargle Sketch it directly from them. This requires patience as you must wait for the wild Pokémon to use the move.
Tips
  • Consider creating a Smeargle specifically for S.O.S. Chaining. Equip it with False Swipe, a KO-capable move with high PP, and a status move like Spore. A fourth slot can be used for weather-changing moves like Rain Dance or Sunny Day. If using Sandstorm or Hail, equip Safety Goggles on Smeargle to prevent chip damage.
  • Ensure your Smeargle is at a high level due to its low base stats. EV training its Attack stat can also be beneficial.
