Follow Route 1 in Pokémon USUM, choose your starter, and battle Hau. Learn about Trainer Tips and find a Potion.

Walkthrough
  1. 1
Exit your house and go down the steps, then follow the dirt path west and north up the hill. The time of day will be daytime in Ultra Sun and nighttime in Ultra Moon, regardless of your 3DS clock.
  2. 2
Continue along the path until you reach a bend with tall grass. Enter the tall grass to trigger a wild Pokémon encounter.
  3. 3
Professor Kukui will arrive and allow you to choose your starter Pokémon from Rowlet, Litten, or Popplio. This is your only chance to get one of these starters without trading or starting a new save file.
  4. 4
After choosing your starter, proceed northwest through the tall grass. Another wild Pokémon will attack; select "Fight" on the bottom screen and use an attack move.
  5. 5
Continue west up the hill. At the top, you'll find Trainer Tips signposts offering gameplay advice.
  6. 6
Northwest of the signposts, across some tall grass, pick up the Poké Ball item to find a Potion.
  7. 7
Head west through the tall grass or along the dirt path. Before reaching Iki Town, Hau will challenge you to a Pokémon battle.
  8. 8
    Pokémon Trainer Hau's Pokémon:
    • Popplio (Level 5, Water) if you picked Rowlet
  9. 9
Rowlet (Level 5, Grass/Flying) if you picked Litten
  10. 10
Litten (Level 5, Fire) if you picked Popplio
  11. 11
After defeating Hau, cut through the tall grass to the northwest. At the end of the path, collect the Paralyze Heal.
  12. 12
Return to where you came from and head up the staircase to reach Iki Town.
