Learn how Pokémon USUM Natures boost stats by 10% and lower others. Get specific natures using Synchronize or the Everstone.
In Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, each Pokémon has a Nature that randomly influences its battle performance. You can check a Pokémon's Nature by navigating to its Summary screen and pressing Right. There are 25 possible Natures, each increasing one stat by 10% and decreasing another by 10%. A red stat on the display indicates a boost, while a blue stat indicates a drop. If a stat is both increased and decreased, no change is visible.
For example, a Hasty Pikachu has increased Speed but reduced Defense, while a Relaxed Pikachu has increased Defense at the cost of reduced Speed. The best Nature depends on your preferences and the situation.
While you can complete the main story with any Nature, beneficial Natures are crucial for competitive play and post-game battles. To choose a Nature, identify your Pokémon's strengths and select a Nature that complements them. For a Pokémon excelling in physical moves, an Adamant Nature (boosting Attack) is recommended. If a Pokémon has high Special Defense, choose a Nature that further boosts it. Boosting Speed is also a good strategy to ensure your Pokémon attacks first.
Avoid Natures that do not boost any stats, like Hardy, as having no strengths is disadvantageous in battles. If you intend to use both Physical and Special moves, opt for a Nature that lowers a Defense stat instead of a stat you plan to use offensively.
The 10% multiplier from a Nature is more effective when applied to a high stat. If a Pokémon has a low stat, it's better to work around it or choose a different Pokémon. For instance, Pikachu can learn the physical move Volt Tackle and can hold the Light Ball, which doubles its Attack and Special Attack. For a fast Pikachu that prioritizes physical moves, a Jolly Nature is ideal. If you want a mixed attacker using both Physical and Special moves, Hasty or Naive Natures are suitable, as Pikachu's defenses are generally low.
Manipulating Natures:
- A Pokémon with the Synchronize Ability at the front of your party will cause wild Pokémon encountered to have a 50% chance of sharing its Nature.
- When breeding Pokémon, if one parent holds the Everstone, their Nature will be passed down to their offspring 100% of the time. If both parents hold an Everstone, there's a 50-50 chance of inheriting either parent's Nature.
