Unlock your character's full potential in Neverwinter Nights! Explore a comprehensive guide to Feats, including types, prerequisites, and a detailed list of available abilities.
A feat is a special feature that grants your character a new capability or improves an existing one. Feats are innate abilities with no ranks or progression; a character either possesses a feat or does not.
Feats are chosen as they become available, starting at character creation. A new feat is gained every three character levels thereafter (3rd, 6th, 9th, 12th, 15th, 18th). Fighters and Wizards receive extra class-related feats. Human characters get a bonus feat at 1st level.
Some feats have prerequisites, requiring specific ability scores, feats, skills, or base attack bonuses. There are different kinds of Feats:
- General Feats: Have no special rules governing them as a group.
- Metamagic Feats: Allow spellcasters to prepare and cast spells with greater effect, but at a higher level than they actually are.
- Class-specific feats: Only available to specified classes, such as Extra Turning for Clerics or Paladins, or Weapon Specialization for Fighters.
Metamagic Feats Explained
When preparing spells, Wizards and Divine spellcasters choose which spells to prepare with a Metamagic Feat, making them cast at a higher level. The spellbook's "Known Spells" pane displays tabs for each Metamagic Feat the caster has acquired, in addition to the "Known Spells" tab.
Sorcerers and Bards decide when to cast spells and whether to use a Metamagic Feat. The improved spell is cast as if it were a higher level. They access this option via their "Spellcasting" Radial Menu. Metamagic-enhanced spells can still be placed on the quickbar.
A metamagic spell operates at its original level, even though it is prepared and cast as a higher-level spell. Saving throw modifications are not changed unless specified otherwise in the feat's description. Metamagic Feats only alter spells cast directly by the user, not those cast from wands, scrolls, or other devices. Metamagic Feats cannot be used for all spells, and only one type of metamagic alteration can be active on a single spell. Different spells can be prepared with different Metamagic Feats.
