Learn how to connect to and host multiplayer games in Neverwinter Nights. Discover player profiles, server hosting options, joining games via LAN or Internet, and character types.

Neverwinter Nights is an excellent multiplayer game. The game offers thousands of players online at any time. A high-speed internet connection is strongly recommended; dial-up will result in significant lag, potentially causing players to be removed from servers. Similarly, if the game lags in single-player due to a poor video card, online play is not advised.

JOURNEYING ONLINE

To play multiplayer, you need an Internet connection (preferably high-speed) or a Local Area Network (LAN) connection. You can either host a game server for others to join or connect to an existing game.

Upon first playing online, you'll create a Player Profile. This profile distinguishes you and grants access to special areas on the Neverwinter Nights community website (www.neverwiternights.com). If you already have a profile, enter your player name and password. Otherwise, click 'Create Profile,' enter your desired player name and password, and an email address. Providing an email is optional but necessary for password recovery.

HOSTING A GAME SERVER

As a host, you have full control over who joins your game and can moderate by booting or banning players. To host, select 'Multiplayer' from the Main Menu, then choose to start a new game or load an existing one. This launches a server with your chosen module or save game, allowing others to join as long as you are present.

When starting a new game, you can customize various options. These include the maximum number of players and whether to password-protect the game. A player password prevents unauthorized joins, while a DM password allows only those with it to connect using the DM client. Player vs. Player (PvP) settings are also available and detailed separately.

JOINING A MULTIPLAYER GAME

To join a game, select 'Multiplayer' from the Main Menu and then 'Join.' A Game Browser window will display available games. If playing offline, the game might pause briefly. Click the 'LAN' tab to scan your local network. With an Internet connection, you'll see a list of available games. You can sort games using filters at the top or toggle 'Gameplay Types' to display specific game types. Select a game and click 'Connect.' The 'History' tab tracks your recent game sessions, allowing you to easily re-join a previous game by selecting it and clicking 'Connect.'

PICKING A CHARACTER

After joining a game, you'll see the 'Choose Character' page. Select a character from the list on the left and click 'Play.' Some characters may be disabled, indicating they are not allowed on the current server due to module restrictions (like level or class) or server-specific character acceptance rules.

LOCAL AND SERVER CHARACTERS

There are two character types: local and server characters.

Local characters are stored on your computer and can be used across various servers, single-player games, or hosted multiplayer games. You take these characters with you when you finish playing.

Server characters are stored only on the game server you join and are only accessible while connected to that server. This is recommended for regular groups, as players cannot alter their characters offline. The server can be configured to accept either local or server characters, and you will be informed of the allowed type upon connecting.
