Griffins are large flying enemies in Dragon's Dogma 2 that can be found circling in the skies outside of major settlements or engaging in combat with other creatures. They may also dive on their prey, which can include humanoids, monsters, or cattle. If you spot one, try to approach it quickly before it moves further away. Griffins will often fly towards you once they've noticed you.

For more precise locations, consult the interactive map.

Griffin Weak Points

The Griffin has several weak points that can be targeted for increased damage: the head, wings, and back (particularly the area between the wings). Melee characters can more easily attack the wings and back by jumping onto the Griffin and clinging to it while attacking. Consistently hitting these weak points can lead to the Griffin being knocked down, allowing for a powerful follow-up attack, such as Empale, which can significantly deplete its health.

Elemental Weaknesses

Griffins are particularly vulnerable to fire and lightning damage. Using fire-based spells or skills is highly recommended. Even if your class doesn't inherently use these elements, you can often acquire buffs like Fire Boon or Fire Affinity from a Mage to imbue your weapon with fire damage. Lightning Boon or Lightning Affinity are also effective alternatives if fire is not available.

Preventing Griffins from Flying Away

As you progress, Griffins may attempt to flee combat earlier. While there's no guaranteed method to stop them, focusing attacks on their wings has been reported to be somewhat effective. Inflicting enough damage to stun or knock down the Griffin can also prevent its escape, though this requires precise timing as the warning signs are minimal. Be prepared to use your strongest special skills when you anticipate a potential escape.

If a Griffin does fly away, you can pursue it by climbing onto its back and allowing it to carry you to its nest. Griffin nests often contain valuable loot. Successfully reaching a nest with the Griffin allows you to finish the fight there and collect the rewards. Additionally, riding a Griffin to its nest (outside of the game's introductory sequence) will unlock The Regriffining achievement.
