There are 8 core companions in "Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader", with the Void Shadows DLC (downloadable content — extra missions or items released after launch) adding a 9th and the Lex Imperialis DLC adding a 10th. Two more companions can be recruited in Chapter 3, though they may be too late to significantly impact your party composition. Additionally, you can recruit one of three secret companions near the end of the game.

Party Composition

When selecting companions, consider their combat roles to enhance or diminish your party's effectiveness. The following lists can be interpreted as rankings for each role:

• Leader (co-ordinates combat and hands out extra turns): Jae, Cassia
• Front-line fighter (specialises in killing enemies close-up): Kibellah, Ulfar, Heinrix, Abelard, Solomorne, Marazhai
• Tank (decent defence, damage is a bonus): Abelard, Ulfar, Heinrix, Pasqal
• Ranged attacker (specialises in killing enemies from a distance): Argenta, Yrliet, Pasqal, Jae
• Blaster (specialises in killing enemies with offensive powers and staff abilities): Idira, Cassia, Heinrix
• Disabler (confounds enemies with disabling abilities): Cassia, Idira, Heinrix, Pasqal
• Medic (buffs the party and keeps them healthy): Cassia, Heinrix, Idira, Pasqal
• Utility (disables traps, picks locks, passes other skill checks): Jae, Pasqal, Cassia, Argenta

Cassia is noted as a top choice for many roles, highlighting her versatility.

Skills Coverage

Ensuring your party covers all necessary skills is crucial. Most characters can master 2 skills, with Jae being an exception who can master multiple skills. Awareness is a generally useful skill if you have leftover skill points.

If your companion build requires Aeldari or Drukhari proficiency, you will need at least one rank of Lore (Xenos). Pay attention to your own Rogue Trader's skills, as specializing in a skill yourself means other characters do not need to.
