Master DM-Phobos in Unreal Tournament's Challenge mode. Learn strategies for controlling power-ups, exploiting the map's verticality, and defeating Xan Kriegor.
This section covers exploits and strategies for Unreal Tournament, specifically focusing on the Challenge mode and the map DM-Phobos.
Exploit for Capturing Objectives: On certain maps, you can exploit a team-switching mechanic to win objectives. Start as an attacker, then switch to the defending team mid-round. Grab a rocket launcher, position yourself outside the objective room (Gun Control), and throw grenades in. Before they explode, switch back to the attacking team. The grenades will then count as attacking and can secure the objective. This exploit may work on maps like Frigate or Mazon but is patched online and doesn't work in the ladder.
Gun Caverns in Overlord: There are two Gun Caverns in Overlord; the second is only used for a post-attack cutscene.
4.5 CHALLENGE: The Challenge section unlocks after winning trophies in other categories. It's similar to Deathmatch (DM) but faster (Lightning Death Match) with four new maps and construct enemies. The final challenge is a 1v1 DM round against Xan Kriegor. Weapons remain after pickup, which is both helpful and dangerous as opponents can also grab them. Power-ups and ammo respawn faster, requiring adjustments to any power-up circuits. See section 4.5 for respawn rate details.
4.5.1 PHOBOS MOON (DM-PHOBOS): This Martian space station map features chaotic rotation and fast-paced combat due to working gravity generators. It's considered one of the best DM maps, with significant vertical (z-axis) fighting. It's the most difficult of the four Challenge maps but popular for online duels. The frag limit is 15, with 5 opponents. The best weapon is the Rocket-launcher.
Powerups / Armour on DM-Phobos:
- Thigh Pads: Outside, on platform 1
- Body Armour: On a high ledge overlooking the low central room
- Shield-belt: Outside, on platform 2
- UDamage: Outside, on platform 3
- Invisibility: Behind a secret panel to the right of the lowest lift (shoot to open)
- Jump Boots (2): One pair outside on platform 1 (near Thigh Pads), the other beside Invisibility
Controlling DM-Phobos: Matches are fast; falling behind early is common. Focus on dealing high damage to multiple opponents and controlling their positions. Grab the rocket-launcher and ammo immediately, then head to the roof using the jump boots. Surviving in lower levels is difficult due to blind corners and z-axis vulnerabilities, which favor bots. With permanent weapon spawns, bots are dangerous. Most powerups are on the roof area. Control these powerups (armour, shield-belt, UDamage) to keep bots lower down. The central well is where most fighting occurs. Use the rocket packs near the low rocket-launcher and the deathtrap health packs to spam enemies. Switch to the bio rifle or flak cannon when ammo is depleted. If you have the Redeemer, use its warhead in the central room for guaranteed kills. Hanging around in the corridor can also be effective.
