Learn how doors, lifts, slopes, and water mechanics work in Unreal Tournament. Discover tips for navigation, combat, and exploiting game features for an edge.

Mechanics:

  1. Doors: Most doors open automatically when approached. Some require hitting a button or completing an objective (e.g., AS-Frigate's upper doors need the Hydraulic Compressor objective). Secret doors can be camouflaged, hidden, and opened by touch, shooting, or hidden buttons/levers. Some weapons, like primary ripper blades, cannot open secret doors, and others, like bio slime, open them with a delay.
  2. Lifts: Lifts transport players between levels. Jumping from a moving lift can increase height, especially with boots or a hammer-jump. Some lifts need activation via levers. Lifts have a failsafe to move upwards if obstructed, which can be exploited (e.g., camping under the final lift in AS-Guardia). Lifts can also be used to trick opponents by activating them and moving off before they ascend, revealing their position.
  3. Slopes: Sloped walls or supports allow for faster movement when dodging along them or reaching higher places by side-dodging up them (e.g., AS-Overlord foxholes, pillar under bio-rifle in DM-Liandri). Sloped surfaces can also mitigate fall damage if landed on correctly.
  4. Water: Water is blue and transparent. Players have 18 seconds underwater before taking 5 damage per second (shield-belts protect, armor does not). Gulping sounds indicate drowning. Landing in water negates fall damage. Players cannot dodge or crouch underwater (crouching makes you sink). The jump button makes you float and climb out. Projectiles are slowed significantly in water. Firing weapons from water can result in slower projectiles exiting. Grenades and flak balls drift down, slime floats. Firing rockets upwards out of water maintains their speed. Dropped weapons sink. There's a bug where shots aimed directly at submerged opponents from above will miss; aim slightly ahead. Bots can see through water.

Darkness: Some maps have dark areas for hiding, but bots can always see players in these areas.
