Learn the best attack and defense strategies for CTF-Face in Unreal Tournament. Master sniping, translocator use, and team tactics to dominate this iconic map.

Alright, let's talk about Part 57, which dives into the legendary CTF-Face map in Unreal Tournament. This map is an absolute classic, and it's where a lot of players really learn the ropes of sniping and coordinated CTF play. It's a 4v4 map set on an asteroid, and the gravity can be a bit wonky, plus you've got snipers from the other team to worry about.

Map Overview & Powerups:

  • Body Armour (2): You'll find one on the roof of each base. Grab these ASAP!
  • Keg O' Health: Right in the center of the map. Super useful if you're taking a beating.
  • UDamage (2): One is in the ceiling above the entrance to each base. This is a game-changer for firefights.

Attack Strategy:

Before you even think about attacking, gear up! Make sure you've got a sniper rifle, a shock rifle, a rocket-launcher, and some body armor. You can grab extra rocket ammo on a ledge above the entrance hallway of either base – just use your translocator to get up there.

The fastest way to grab the enemy flag is usually by translocating straight over the hill and into their base. It's quicker and you're less exposed than running. While there's not a ton of complex strategy here, it's more about your combat skills. You can try a more advanced move by translocating up the outside of the enemy base and attacking the flag through one of their teleporters, but this takes time and you might be vulnerable to enemies respawning nearby. Escaping with the flag through the teleporters is also an option, grabbing armor and ammo on the way, but be ready to take some health loss when you have to jump off the tower.

Here's a cool trick: have your team-mates hold position halfway down the hill towards the enemy base. When you run in and grab the flag solo, they act as a great shield for you to run through and a roadblock for the enemies chasing you. This also works if you escape via a teleporter – you can actually leap into your team-mates, deliberately splat (die), drop the flag, and have one of them pick it up and run for home while you respawn to back them up.

Don't forget the power of the rocket launcher! If a team-mate is carrying the flag home, try firing rockets at their feet for a speed boost. Just be careful not to send them flying off the map!

Advanced Scoring Tactic (vs. AI):

  1. Grab your base's Redeemer. Head to the roof, pick up the armor, and use your T/L from the roof teleporter ramp to reach one of the teleporter ledges on the front of the blue base.
  2. T/L into the enemy base, grab their flag, and head through the central teleporter to the roof. Stand on the sniper rifle at the very edge of the roof, facing your blue roof teleporter. Shoot the Redeemer into the floor at the top of that teleporter ramp, then let yourself die.
  3. If you were facing away from your own base, the blue flag should fly through the air and land right by the Keg O' Health spawn point in the middle of the map, where your nearest teammate can easily grab it.

Defense Strategy:

On defense, camping right outside your double doors is way better than trying to camp inside. You're right next to your armor and can easily grab more shock ammo. You can also T/L or side-dodge up to the top of the door surround. From this vantage point, you get an early warning of enemies coming from the high corridor and have plenty of spam weapons to deal with them. Camping at the top of the ramp, facing the double doors, lets you hit enemies as they arrive and blast them again as they try to leave with your flag.

If an enemy flag carrier does manage to get past your defenses, translocate through the water to catch up. There are four health packs down there if you're in a pinch, but be aware you're vulnerable for a few seconds while in the water.

Miscellaneous Tips:

On maps like Niven (which is 2v2), the AI always assigns specific roles: at least one bot attacks, and at least one defends. Attackers go for the enemy flag, defenders camp their own. In Niven, you know their strategy won't change, and you only have one teammate who's pretty much useless. Don't rely on them too much; putting them on defense is bad because they can't catch up to a flag carrier if they die. Telling them to hold position isn't much better, as they won't chase if the enemy gets past. Asking them to cover you is hopeless because they can't keep up. Your best bet is to stick them on basic attack – at least they'll cover you when you have the flag, and you can sometimes overwhelm the enemy defense.

Always, always pick up both the armor and the pads under the ramps in your base. Don't let the enemy get them!
