Complete Unreal Tournament Part 71 walkthrough covering Gatehouse, Main Doors, and Escape objectives for both attack and defense.
Walkthrough
- 1From the start, go through the doors and to the right to touch the large wheel, which opens three more doors leading through the Library to the chains. Consider performing a hammer-jump (a jump combined with a weapon strike) before going through the double doors to the outside; let teammates go first, then follow. HJ backwards off the stairs, aiming for the wheel, or dodge to the ground and do a backwards HJ for a faster approach.
- 2Objective 2 / 3: Gatehouse - Reach the chains by running through the Library into the tight corridor in the back wall. The two chains are at the far end and can be shot with any weapon, including alt-hammer strikes. Grouped rockets, rippers, or flak shots from the door end of the corridor can destroy them without needing to reach the end of the tunnel. Each chain counts as one objective, worth ten points. A popular and effective ripper-shot strategy involves standing or crouching just inside the outer Library door, under the torch, and firing primary ripper blades at the side of the doorway connecting the main Library room to the chains corridor, aiming to bounce them down the corridor to the chains. Both chains can be destroyed from this position with only two blades, one per chain.
- 3Objective 4: The Main Doors - Run into the small Gatehouse and touch the lever to open the massive doors outside. It is often beneficial to linger by the Gatehouse and let teammates attempt to destroy the chains. If they succeed, you can enter the Gatehouse, open the Main Doors, and advance towards the end before the enemy (def) has returned from the Library.
- 4Objective 5: Escape! - With the Main Doors open, the path to the end of the map is clear. Run to the end and attempt to jump into the water to win the map. Similar to the previous objective, wait near the Main Doors (feign death or hide behind the hay bale) and wait for your bots to hit the Gatehouse, granting you a head start. If a teammate is ahead of the enemy and heading for victory, stay behind and spam the enemy spawn-room to protect their chances.
Defense Strategy:
- Objective 1: Library - This map is highly defensible due to attackers having to pass through doorways into a wall of fire or flak. The slime is useful for coating the first double doors, and your minigun can handle attackers heading towards the wheel lever.
- Objective 2 / 3: Gatehouse - The Library is also easy to defend as bots will not attempt ripper-shots and must advance down to the chains through doorways and tight corridors. Use rockets and shock weapons to impede their progress.
- Objective 4: The Main Doors - After the chains are destroyed, respawning attackers will use the double doors instead of the Library. It is advisable to position yourself near the Main Doors while attackers are focused on the Gatehouse. Once the doors open, you can race down the long avenue before the attackers.
- Objective 5: Escape! - There are no health packs, but a sniper rifle and ample ammunition are available at the back of the level, allowing for prolonged defense. If you are not proficient with the sniper rifle, allow teammates to handle this while you defend the Gatehouse, directing flak fire at enemies emerging from the large double doors. Continue to take pads in the spawn-room. If defending at the back, ensure you acquire a rocket launcher and shock rifle from your spawn area before leaving, as these weapons offer significant protection against attackers reaching the Escape! area.
Miscellaneous Tips:
- Always try to position yourself along the route to the next objective, whether attacking or defending. This can provide a head start depending on your teammates' performance.
- On attack, consider shooting spread rockets at the feet of a teammate running directly in front of you towards the Escape! objective. Six rockets to the ankles can launch a bot to the end, but you will need to collect the rocket launcher (R/L) from the Library first.
- The sniper rifle from the attacker's spawn-point sniper nest can be very useful for attacking the Escape! objective. Defenders at the back also have sniper rifles, making one useful for covering long distances.
- You only need to defend this map for a maximum of four minutes; resort to spamming weapons if out of other ideas.
- Exploit for Defense: If you are struggling to defend Rook, an exploit can prevent attackers from entering the Library. Run outside the defender spawn-room and hammer-jump to the higher roof above it (either two hammer-jumps with thigh pads or one with an alt-hammer click off the wall). Proceed to the back wall and locate the two triangular holes side-by-side. Fall into the left one, which is large enough. When attackers activate the wheel to open the Library, all three sets of doors will remain shut. This is an oversight by the map maker.
