Navigate the manufactured ruins of Cryptic in Unreal Tournament! Learn effective bot tactics, control points, and master the flow of this unique Domination map.

Alright, let's dive into Part 50 of our Unreal Tournament journey. This section covers a couple of maps, but the real meat is in Cryptic. It's a bit of a unique one, built by a legendary Tournament Master, and it's got a specific flow you'll want to get a handle on. Completing this map is key because it unlocks the Capture the Flag ladder, so pay attention!

Map Overview:

Cryptic is one of the few arenas that feels truly 'manufactured,' originally a personal training facility for the Tournament Master Kilbragh. After his passing, Liandri scooped it up and now uses it for our entertainment. It's not the most balanced map, which means there are ways to exploit it for a quick win, but understanding its flow is crucial.

Map Details:

  • Teams: 4v4
  • Score Limit: Not specified for Cryptic, but implied to be relevant for progression.

Powerups / Armour:

  • Thigh Pads: Located on a platform above the Gargoyle CP.
  • Body Armour: Found behind the door next to the Daemon Head CP.
  • Shield-belt: Also on a platform above the Gargoyle CP.

Recommended CP / Bot Tactics:

  • You: All
  • Bots: 2 on Iron Star, 1 on Gargoyle.

Controlling the Map:

The action in Cryptic tends to flow from Daemon Head towards Gargoyle. There's a one-way teleporter that shoots players from near Daemon Head straight to the Gargoyle area. The catch? There's no quick way back for the bots. This means bots rarely bother capturing Daemon Head, so you don't need to worry too much about defending it once it's yours. It's a bit of a dead end, so you can grab it and then focus your efforts elsewhere.

The Iron Star is the hot spot in the center, surrounded by spawn points. It's tough to hold, but with you there, your bots can make a real stand. If you park yourself on that curving ledge, keeping an eye on both the high tunnel and the low door, you can spam enemies effectively. A well-placed shock-combo can take out groups of bots since they love to bunch up on it. Once your teammates are back in position, you can shift your focus to the Gargoyle CP.

Reaching the Gargoyle CP is quickest via that one-way teleporter. Bots will be coming through there, plus from the tunnels near the rocket launcher. This area needs serious defending. Make good use of the thigh pads and shield belt above it, along with the rockets and flak cannon nearby. Since Gargoyle is so popular, assigning just one bot there is smart. If the enemy takes it, your team can focus on the other two CPs with a numbers advantage, or the enemy bots will have a long trek to Iron Star or Daemon Head, making them easy targets.

Your Role:

To really control the map, take full responsibility for the Daemon Head CP. Start there, drop your Translocator (T/L) in the teleporter room next to the body armor (grab it, obviously!). Then, leave Daemon Head behind and move to guard the Iron Star, picking up the shock rifle and ammo as you go. Once Iron Star is secure, grab health packs if you need them and head through the high tunnel (seriously, avoid the low tunnel) to reach the rocket launcher. Keep going along the curving platform, snagging the shield belt if it's there, and spam the teleporter exit door. Finally, take the Gargoyle CP, grabbing the thigh pads and flak cannon. Once that's done, T/L back to the armor room and start the cycle again.

Miscellaneous Tips for Cryptic:

  • Always use the top tunnel, between the pulse rifle and rocket launcher, to travel between Iron Star and Gargoyle. The low minigun tunnel takes way too long.
  • Remember the general mobility tips from earlier: don't waste your boot jumps unless you really need them; they're crucial for staying mobile.
  • The shock rifle is king on this map, so controlling it is a high priority for your team. Weapon placement isn't its strong suit, so be ready to fight for the good stuff.
  • The two spawn rooms have fans in the ceiling. If you exit and turn right, you're heading towards the Center CP.
  • A standard walk-jump won't get you onto the platform for the Center CP. You'll need an alt-hammer-walk-jump, or use your T/L, to make that jump.

Next up, we'll briefly touch on Cinder Foundry, but Cryptic is where the real strategy lies for this part!
