Learn Unreal Tournament Capture the Flag basics, attack strategies, and how to use bots effectively. Default score limit is 3.

Walkthrough
  1. 1
When playing a team match in the ladder, you are automatically put on the red team, which affects CTF and Assault (AS). Red and blue bases are asymmetrical on many CTF maps, and the red team always attacks first in AS. This walkthrough is written from a red team point of view.
  2. 2
Every CTF map has a default score limit of 3.
  3. 3
To grab the enemy flag, you must know how to enter and exit the enemy base. Most CTF maps are symmetrical (e.g., Niven, Face, Coret, Dreary, Hydro Bases, Orbital), so knowing your own base's layout helps with the enemy's.
  4. 4
If you are new to a map, spectate a team-mate (press F5) as they enter the enemy base to learn routes and potential enemy camping spots.
  5. 5
Knowing all entry and exit points of the enemy base allows you to plan attack and escape routes, considering weapon, health, and power-up locations.
  6. 6
Do not assume team-mates will be alive when you reach the flag. Use team-mates covering you as a buffer by sending them in first to absorb defensive fire.
  7. 7
When running back with the flag, enemies will robotically follow your exact route instead of cutting you off. Use a different escape route than your attack route to have enemies behind you.
  8. 8
Before grabbing the flag, prepare by pilfering nearby armor and increasing your health to be ready for the opposition's attention.
  9. 9
Evading enemies while grabbing their flag can be better than killing them. Killing guards may mean you have to kill them again on your way out as they will have respawned and know your location. Leaving them alive and out-distancing them can make a lone attacker's job easier.
  10. 10
Ordering bots to attack the base lacks coordination; they run in, get killed, respawn (be brought back to life at a checkpoint after death), and repeat. For effective bot attacks, go with them. Order team-mates to cover (press the cover button to crouch behind walls or objects) you, move to just outside the enemy base, then order them to attack simultaneously while you follow behind to grab the flag.
  11. 11
Team-mates who died in an assault will have respawned and be attacking again, which aids the flag carrier.
Tips
  • The jump boots in the miscellaneous section are less useful than they seem, as their jumps are not high enough to reach roofs on the CP level, except for the raised bases of cranes, areas with boots/armor, and the minigun. You can reach the roof by boot-jumping off the rising lift at the Helipad. The boots' main purpose is to survive falls to the water level, not to reach high places (use the T/L for that).
  • To reach the shield-belt at the Helipad without wasting boots, walk-jump off the rising lift.
  • A lift far underneath the Crane CP rises when stepped on, allowing quicker access to the top. A tactical suicide is often faster. This applies if you spawn low or are blasted off the edge.
  • If you spawn low and do not wish to suicide, there is a second minigun and the map's only pulse rifle at the water level.
  • Using a redeemer to clear CPs during a firefight is a bad idea. It kills opponents who will respawn and return, while your team-mates might be blasted into the water, not dying immediately but taking a long time to return via lifts, potentially costing points.
  • Most attacks on the Boxes area come from the nearby lift. Dumping your T/L underneath it will cause problems for the opposition.
  • Bots almost always spawn on levels below CPs. Controlling the lifts can help control bots, as they must use them unless they can translocate through a window.
  • When grabbing the flag, any nearby enemies will home in on you, except for bots carrying your flag.
