Learn how to effectively use the versatile Rocket Launcher in Unreal Tournament, including primary fire modes, secondary grenade throws, homing missiles, and strategies for offense and defense.

Walkthrough
  1. 1
    Rocket Launcher (Class: All-Purpose)
    • Primary Fire: Fires rockets singly or in groups based on how long the button is held. Up to six rockets can be loaded. Six rockets can kill any opponent. This mode is strong for offense at close- to mid-range, especially on maps like DM-KGalleon. Loading time and slow projectile speed make it difficult to use offensively against skilled opponents who can dodge. Firing at close range can result in self-damage due to splash damage.
  2. 2
Homing Missiles: Hold crosshairs on an enemy for a couple of seconds to acquire a target lock, indicated by a reticle. Rockets will then home in on the target. To evade homing missiles, move towards them and then sideways just before impact, as their turning radius is limited. Alt-hammer can also deflect them. Homing missiles are effective against submerged opponents as they cannot dodge. A beep indicates target acquisition. Enemies using Invisibility can be detected. The lock is lost after a missile hits or misses.
  3. 3
Spread vs. Cluster Fire: With multiple rockets loaded, holding the secondary button produces a tightly packed cluster of missiles. This cluster can also be used as homing missiles. Leaving the secondary button untouched results in rockets flying in a spread pattern, which has no homing capability.
  4. 4
Secondary Fire (Grenades): Throws up to six grenades that bounce off surfaces until they explode. Useful for covering your own back (e.g., in CTF-Dreary), bouncing around corners, or through holes to hit campers or AS objectives. Bots do not use grenades, rocket clusters, or spreads unless Smart Stock Bots are enabled and on higher difficulties.
  5. 5
Bot Behavior: At higher difficulty levels, bots home in by default without needing to wait for a lock, with or without Smart Stock Bots.
  6. 6
Efficient Use: The most efficient way to kill with the Rocket Launcher is to fire pairs of rockets at the feet of enemies, which can take down unarmoured opponents with minimal aiming skill, though it requires a short setup time.
  7. 7
Targeting Limitations: Rockets can only lock onto opponents; they cannot lock onto friendlies, AS objectives, or turrets.
  8. 8
Weapon Switching: You cannot cancel loading multiple rockets or grenades. You must wait for them to release. However, you can press a bind or scroll to another weapon to queue it up, and it will switch once the rockets are out.
Tips
  • Jumping and staying off the ground can help avoid rockets fired around your feet.
  • Closing the distance to an opponent can discourage them from using the Rocket Launcher.
  • Use grenades to deny areas, flush out campers, or protect yourself when carrying objectives.
  • Be mindful of splash damage when using rockets at close range, as it can harm both you and your opponent.
  • Listen for the loading and homing beeps to anticipate rocket attacks or to use as an early warning system.
