Diablo IV Runewords Guide: Craft & Use

Runes return in Diablo IV: Vessel of Hatred, allowing players to combine up to two pairs of runes to create custom runewords. Unlock runes by completing the quest Fundament of Faith. Pair a Ritual Rune with an Invocation Rune to create a Runeword. Ritual Runes generate Offering when specific conditions are met, and enough Offering will trigger the Invocation Rune's effects. Only two Runewords can be equipped at once, and each rune can only be used once per runeword. Unsocketing runes is free and does not destroy them or the gear. Runes can be combined at a Jeweler to randomly create new runes.

To find runes, complete the main quest Fundament of Faith, which unlocks the tutorial quest Rune Crafting. Runes can be found via random drops from various sources, including Helltide chests, Tree of Whisper caches, World Bosses, Uber Bosses, Pit runs, and Legion events. Crafting runes at the Jeweler is a supplemental source, requiring the expenditure of other runes for a chance at new ones.

Runes in Diablo 4 are simplified compared to Diablo 2. Only two runes are needed to create a runeword. There are two types: Ritual runes (orange) and Invocation runes (purple). Ritual runes generate Offering based on specific actions (e.g., evading, using a healing potion, casting an ultimate skill, using a skill after moving). Invocation runes trigger an effect when enough Offering is generated, often with a short cooldown.

For example, the Ritual rune “Cem” generates 50 Offering when you evade. Paired with the Invocation rune “Ohm,” which casts the Barbarian skill “War Cry” when 600 Offering is accumulated, they create the runeword “CemOhm.” This runeword will cast War Cry every twelve evades. The effects of Ritual and Invocation runes are diverse, offering abilities from other classes (like War Cry, Frost Nova, Teleport, Stun Grenades) and providing general boons like increased Critical Strike Chance or primary resource restoration. Rune pairings depend on your class, build, and playstyle.

To create a runeword, socket two runes into a piece of armor (helmets, chest armor, or pants). You can equip only two runewords at once and cannot reuse runes within the same runeword. Offering generated is specific to the Invocation rune it's paired with and generates independently. For instance, if you have a “Cem” rune for one runeword and a “Zan” rune for another, Cem generates Offering when you dodge, while Zan generates Offering when you use an Ultimate skill, and they charge and proc at different times.

You can unsocket runes from gear at a Jeweler for free, without destroying the runes or the armor. This allows for experimentation with runewords.
