There are five uber bosses in diablo iv, and none can be encountered without special materials. - 3Grigoire, Galvanic Saint (Max Lv 75): Requires Living Steel x2 (World Tier III) or x5 (World Tier IV). Living Steel is found in Helltide events, specifically from Tortured Gift of Living Steel chests which cost 300 Aberrant Cinders. The boss dungeon is the Hall of the Penitent in Dindai Flats, Dry Steppes.
- 4Lord Zir (Max Lv 80): Requires Exquisite Blood x9. These are obtained from Legion Events and World Bosses. The boss dungeon is The Darkened Way in Gale Valley, Fractured Peaks.
- 5The Beast in the Ice (Max Lv 85): Requires Distilled Fear x9 and Sigil Powder x250. These are obtained from Tier 30+ Nightmare Dungeons. The boss dungeon is the Glacial Fissure in Desolate Highlands, Fractured Peaks.
Different bosses have different unique drop pools, although the quality of the gear they drop – both in terms of the rarity of the uniques and the Item Power of any item dropped, unique or otherwise – is a function of the boss’s level. If you want the rarest and most powerful gear in the game, you’ll need to defeat Duriel, Maggot King. Since you need to farm Grigoire and Varshan to fight Duriel, you’ll end up climbing the loot ladder somewhat organically.

The Echo of Varshan requires four different malignant components to face. Aside from grinding out Grim Favors for the Tree of Whispers or killing Grotesque Debtors, there’s not a lot you can do to expedite this process. Grotesque Debtors randomly spawn as you complete other events, including Grim Favors, Legion Events, and after defeating World Bosses.
Grigoire, Galvanic Saint Loot Table (Lv 75):
- Unique Drops (All Classes): Penitent Greaves
- Unique Drops (Barbarian): Ancient’s Oath, Battle Trance, Rage of Harrogath, Ramaladni’s Magnum Opus
- Unique Drops (All Classes): The Butcher’s Cleaver (also Barbarian)
- Unique Drops (Druid): Hunter’s Zenith, Insatiable Fury, Waxing Gibbous
- Unique Drops (Necromancer): Blood Artisan’s Cuiras
Grigoire, Galvanic Saint is a Lv75 boss, putting him firmly at the lower tier of gear drops. He’s somewhat easier to farm than Echo of Varshan, as you need to brave Helltide events and look out for Tortured Gift of Living Steel chests. These chests aren’t visible on the main map but can be seen on the minimap (the small circular map in the bottom-left corner of your screen) when you’re close enough. Spend 300 Aberrant Cinders and defeat the associated demon to score between 1-3 Living Steel (1-2 in World Tier III, 3 in World Tier IV). It costs 2x Living Steel to fight Grigoire in World Tier III and 5x in World Tier IV, so you may have to complete several Helltides to get the Living Steel you need. In World Tier IV, Grigoire will yield a Shard of Agony, which is needed to summon Duriel, Maggot King.
- Defeating Grigoire and Echo of Varshan in World Tier IV is required to obtain the materials needed to summon Duriel, Maggot King.
