Fishing Guide

Learn how to start fishing in Diablo IV's Lord of Hatred expansion, find Shi Yugong, and understand the rewards including fish collection challenges and potential Kraken encounters.

To begin fishing in Diablo IV, you must first progress through the Lord of Hatred expansion by reaching Skovos and completing the main quest The Queen and the Saint. Upon completion, as the next main quest, What’s Yet Unseen, commences, you will receive a notification for the fishing side quest, aptly named Fishing.

After concluding your business in Temis, exit the city through the northeastern gate. The quest giver, Shi Yugong, is located east of Temis. Follow the coast southeast from the bridge exiting the city to reach him. Shi Yugong will be at the end of a dock, challenging you to catch something. He will provide you with a fishing rod.

Fishing is initiated using the “Cast Fishing Line” emote. If you have available emote slots, it should auto-equip. Press the emote key, select the “Cast Fishing Line” emote, and face a valid body of water. You will cast your line, and must wait for the water near the line to become splashy. At this point, press the indicated button (or watch for the icon above your character) to reel in your catch. Success depends on timing; failure means you’ll need to try again. There is no bait or complex mini-game, only patience and reflexes.

Upon your first successful catch, Shi Yugong will challenge you to catch more, initiating the side quest Favor for a Favor. This quest guides your fishing journey and ensures you receive rewards. Your catches are found in the “Consumables” tab of your inventory. Consuming a fish adds it to your collection. Navigate to the “Collections” tab, then “Challenges,” and scroll to “Fishing.” The “Tenacious Angler” challenge requires collecting all 117 fish variants across Sanctuary. Fishing spots have a random pool of fish, so persistence is key. Challenges are region-specific, helping you track progress.

In certain areas, particularly along the coast east and north of Shi Yugong where you might find “Blood in the Water,” fishing can be more perilous. Fishing in these spots may provoke Kraken Head enemies, indicating that some fishing locations are more than just recreational.
