How to Unlock the Transmog System in Diablo 4

The Transmog system, which lets you change your gear's appearance, is super straightforward to unlock. You don't have to wait for ages or complete a crazy questline. Here’s the lowdown on how to get it rolling so you can start customizing your look.

First things first: Progress the Story a Bit

You'll need to get through the game's Prologue. Once you hit the main city, Kyovashad, you're basically free to roam and start messing with systems like this. Don't worry, the ability to salvage gear and change your appearance isn't locked behind a high level or a super long story beat.

Step 1: Salvage Your Gear at the Blacksmith

Before you can even think about changing your look, you need to actually get the transmog options. How do you do that? By salvaging! Head over to the Blacksmith – you know, the guy with the anvil icon. You'll see an option to Salvage your equipment there.

At this stage of the game, anything that's not giving you better stats is fair game. Seriously, go ahead and salvage all those Common Items (the white ones) and any Magic pieces (blue ones) that are just cluttering your inventory. Not only do you get some useful crafting materials back, but crucially, salvaging an item adds its cosmetic appearance to your Wardrobe collection. It's a win-win!

Interact with the Wardrobe, and bam! You've accessed the Transmog system. From here, you can start changing up your character's look. You'll even find you can change the colors of the cosmetics you've unlocked.

Understanding Pigments and Ensembles

Inside the Wardrobe interface, you'll see slots for all your weapon and armor types. Click on a slot, and you'll see all the appearances you've unlocked so far from salvaging. Pretty neat, right?
