Learn how Diablo IV events work, from finding them on the map to completing objectives and earning bonus rewards. Master 'Hold Your Ground,' 'Raze the Effigies,' and more!

Alright, let's talk about how these in-game events shake up your Diablo IV adventures. They're those spontaneous challenges that pop up all over Sanctuary, offering a nice break from the main quest and a chance for some sweet loot. Think of them as little side-quests that appear on your map, but with a twist: the location is always the same, but the objective can change.

Most of the time, these events will have you battling waves of monsters, but there's usually a specific goal you need to hit while you're doing all that fighting. We've seen a bunch of different objectives, and while this isn't everything, here are some you'll likely run into:

  • Hold Your Ground: Basically, you need to survive against enemy onslaughts.
  • Ancient Syphon: Similar to Hold Your Ground, you'll be defending a spot from attackers.
  • Raze the Effigies: This one's a bit more destructive – you'll need to find and destroy a set number of enemy structures, usually 3.
  • Insatiable Hunger: Keep an eye out for a possessed enemy. You've got to take it down before it gets sacrificed to the Devourer of Souls.
  • Jar of Souls: Monsters are messing with a mysterious jar, and your job is to clear them out.
  • Caravan Under Siege: A caravan is under attack, and you need to ensure its survival.

On top of these main objectives, there are also 'event masteries.' These are like bonus challenges that can pop up either during the event or right at the end. They might ask you to save some NPCs or even take down a mini-boss. If you nail the mastery, you'll snag extra experience points and, even better, the reward chest you get at the end will be upgraded. So, a regular chest could become a Greater Radiant chest, meaning better loot!

For example, the Hold Your Ground event often requires you to survive three waves of enemies. If you manage to protect the Wanderer NPC throughout the whole ordeal, you'll also complete its mastery objective.

How to Find and Start Events

Spotting an event is pretty straightforward. Look for a circular orange marker on your minimap. If you're far away, you'll see it on the main world map. The best part? These events have a pretty quick respawn time, usually around 5 minutes. Keep in mind, though, that the objective might be different each time it pops up. From what we've seen, events tend to appear in the same spots on the map across Sanctuary, with only the type of event changing. This is still something players are testing out, so keep an eye on it!

To jump into an event, just walk into the area marked by that orange circle. If another player has already started it, you can still join in. Sometimes, you'll need to head towards a smaller orange marker to kick things off yourself.

What are Zone Events?

Now, Zone Events are a bit different – they're rarer and take much longer to respawn. These are designed with groups in mind, but if you've got some solid gear, you can definitely tackle them solo. In the beta, we encountered a Zone Event called “The Gathering Legions” near the Kor Dragan Stronghold. The goal was to slay enemies to provoke the Servants of Hell, with a mastery objective of defeating them.

Once we provoked the first Servant of Hell, we had to take down a miniboss called Blood Blister, which was protected by smaller enemies that needed to be destroyed first. After dealing with the first Servant, we had to move to a new location and fight more enemies to summon another Servant. Unfortunately, we didn't manage to get the second Servant of Hell to spawn due to our damage output not being high enough at the time. However, it still spawned a boss for us, which turned out to be the Blood Bishop, a familiar face from some dungeons. We've heard whispers online about mounts potentially dropping from these Zone Events, but we can't personally confirm that just yet.

What Rewards Do Events Give?

Like most of the side activities in Sanctuary, completing events nets you experience, Renown, gold, and a good chance at some quality loot. You'll get gear from any elite enemies or bosses that show up, but the real prize is the chest you get at the end. If you manage to complete the event's mastery objective, that chest gets a serious upgrade, significantly boosting your chances of finding high-tier legendary items.
