Voyage to the New World
Embark on your Monster Hunter: World journey! This guide covers your initial voyage, character creation, escaping monsters at sea, and navigating the Ancient Forest to reach Astera.
Alright, new hunter! Welcome to Monster Hunter: World. We're about to embark on your very first big adventure: the Voyage to the New World. It's a bit of a wild ride, but don't worry, I'll walk you through it. First things first, enjoy the atmosphere below deck – it's your last moment of peace before things get interesting. You'll chat with another hunter, get some backstory, and then it's time to make your character and your trusty Palico. Take your time here; you'll be looking at this character for a long time!
After character creation, there's more story, and then BAM! Your ship runs into some serious trouble. You'll find yourself on a giant monster. Use the [Left Analog] to move forward towards a cliff. When prompted, hit [L3] or [R1]/[RB] to sprint. Reach the cliff and just walk into it – you'll automatically climb. Use [R1]/[RB] again to climb faster. You'll then meet up with The Handler. Stick with her, and just follow her lead. You'll be climbing more as the monster moves. Don't worry about the hazards you see; they're just for show.
Keep following The Handler. You'll climb another cliff, and then it's time for a daring escape. Sprint downhill off the monster, and you'll pull off a crazy jump to get away. Pretty wild, right?
Through the Ancient Forest
So, you used one monster to escape another – classic! But your ride doesn't last forever, and soon you'll find yourself in the Ancient Forest, on foot. It's a bit unnerving to be unarmed in a place full of monsters, but hey, better than being stuck on that giant beast!
Your first task is to follow The Handler to an abandoned camp. Luckily, she finds a map for you. Press the [Touchpad] to open it up and get your bearings. You'll also get a mini-map in the bottom left corner of your screen, which will be super helpful.
The Handler will give you what's called your Hunter's Notebook. It's got all sorts of useful info, including that local map. Keep an eye out for Scoutflies too – these little glowing bugs will guide you to your objectives. Just follow them when you see them!
Follow The Handler again, and she'll lead you to some vines. Push through them, but watch out! On the other side, you'll run into some aggressive lizards – Jagras, they're called. You're unarmed, so fighting isn't an option. When you get control, look for some foliage to hide in. When prompted, press [X]/[A] to dive into the bushes and evade them. This is your first lesson in using the environment to your advantage!
Once the Jagras lose interest, it's time for you to move on. Trail The Handler southeast, up some ledges, and through more vines. You'll have to jump off another cliff – or climb down if you're feeling cautious. Rejoin The Handler, and she'll point out some massive monster tracks. Take a look if you want (press [Circle]/[B] when you're close). Then, keep following her. Uh oh, she's found a big monster... or rather, it's found her.
After a bit of help from the Field Team Leader, you'll need to race east, following your companion and the monster chasing her. Thankfully, some other monster shows up to help! Now, you need to be brave and run past the monsters fighting. Just hope they're too busy to notice you.
Welcome to Astera!
And here we are: Astera! This is the main hub for the Research Commission, and it'll be your home base. The guy who saved you will have a quick chat, and then you'll meet the Commander. He'll explain more later at a council meeting. For now, your priority is to find your Palico, who got separated during that whole 'monster ship' incident. The Field Team Leader will offer to help you look for your little buddy.
Jagras of the Ancient Forest
Learn how to hunt Jagras in Monster Hunter: World! This guide covers basics like the Supply Box, item pouch, HUD elements, and the Jagras hunt itself.
Alright, so you've landed in the Ancient Forest and The Handler's going to give you the rundown on how to complete quests. Basically, you just gotta do the thing they tell you to do. She'll mark the Jagras you saw earlier on your map. Then, she'll point you to the Supply Box. Every camp has one, and it's packed with free stuff you'll need for the mission. Definitely grab the First-aid Meds and EZ Rations from it – they'll keep your Health and Stamina topped up. It's always better to use these freebies than to dip into your own supplies!
The game starts off pretty gently, showing you exactly where to go. Thankfully, the Field Team Leader will tag along for your first real mission, so you won't be totally on your own. As you move, the game will give you a little nudge about items. You can check your Item Pouch anytime by hitting the [Options]/[Menu] button and looking under the 'Items and Equipment' tab. Your Item Bar, down in the bottom right, shows what you've got ready to go. Use the D-Pad to cycle through items and [Square]/[X] to use them.
For quicker access, hold down [L1]/[LB]. This brings up the radial menus, and you've got four of them you can customize later. For now, if you hold [L1]/[LB] and push up on the [Right Analog] stick, you can quickly use your Whetstone. It's super handy, so make sure you remember that.
You'll also want to keep an eye on your HUD. The time limit is up in the top left, near your Health and Stamina bars (those green and yellow diamonds). Down below those, you'll see info about your weapon, and even lower, your Palico's status. On the upper right, you'll find context-sensitive command prompts and your current objectives. And don't forget the mini-map in the bottom left!
Hunting Jagras
You're starting this mission from the Southwest Camp, the same spot you first arrived in the New World. Head northeast, following the same path you took before, until you reach the river-crossed lowlands. You'll see some docile Aptonoths chilling there – just ignore them. Your goal is to meet up with the Field Team Leader. Follow him north; he'll lead you to a vine-covered area, and beyond that is where the Jagras hang out.
Once you enter the Jagras' lair, it's time to get your fight on. Don't sweat it too much; these guys aren't exactly boss monsters, especially now that you're geared up. Take down as many as you can. If they try to run, chase 'em down and carve up their bodies for some useful monster parts. Keep pushing deeper into their lair, where you'll find more of them. You need to hunt down seven Jagras in total. After you've got your seven, loot everything you can before the quest officially wraps up. You'll get extra quest rewards on top of everything you've already picked up. After stashing or selling your loot, you'll see even more rewards, and your Palico will get some experience based on its performance during the hunt.
Astera After the Jagras Investigation
After the Jagras Investigation, learn to forge and upgrade gear at Astera's Workshop, understand Research Points, and unlock online play at the Gathering Hub.
Alright, you've taken down your first big monster! Now it's time to see what Astera is all about. First things first, let's head back to the Workshop. You'll want to chat with the Second Fleet Master – that's the guy by the conveyor belt. He's super excited because you've brought him materials, and he's ready to show you how to turn those monster bits into awesome new gear!
He'll explain that you collect materials from hunts, and he uses them to craft new weapons and armor for you. As a welcome gift, he'll even give you some basic materials to get started. Once you're done chatting, the Workshop's full capabilities will be unlocked. You'll see options like:
- Forge Equipment: This is where you'll craft new weapons and armor using the materials you've gathered.
- Upgrade Equipment: Here, you can spend materials (like ores and monster parts for weapons, or Armor Spheres for armor) to make your gear even stronger. Weapons have upgrade trees, meaning you can choose different paths to evolve them. Don't worry about making the wrong choice, though – you can reverse upgrades and get your materials and Zenny back!
- Forge Palico Equipment: Just like it sounds, you can craft and upgrade your Palico's gear using materials, Research Points, and Zenny.
- Customize Bowgun: Bowguns upgrade differently; you add special mods to them. The number of mods you can equip depends on the Bowgun's rarity, and identical mods stack for extra power.
- Manage Kinsects: If you're using an Insect Glaive, this is where you'll manage your Kinsect. You nurture them, and this indirectly upgrades your weapon, similar to an upgrade tree.
Seriously, don't be afraid to experiment with forging and upgrading. It's a core part of getting stronger in Monster Hunter!
After you've had your fun at the Workshop, head outside. Look for a seated NPC called the "Airship Engineer" – he's usually at a table. He'll tell you a bit about the Third Fleet's troubles and his plans to rescue stranded scholars. It's a little hint about future adventures, so keep it in mind!
Next up, let's check out the Ecological Research station. It's on the western side of Astera, just north of the Provisions Stockpile. Chat with the Chief Ecologist there. He's going to teach you all about Research Points.
Basically, when you're out on hunts, follow those helpful Scoutflies to monster tracks and other points of interest. Gathering this intel progresses your Research Level for each monster. The more intel you gather, the more the researchers back in Astera learn, and the better they can help you. You'll get passive bonuses as your Research Level goes up, like faster Scoutfly leveling.
Then there's your Scoutfly Level. This one's a bit different – it's more like your hunter's short-term memory of a specific monster's behavior. It increases as you gain research points, but it can degrade over time if you stop hunting that monster. As your Scoutfly Level increases, your Scoutflies get smarter: they'll start by showing you the monster's next track, then guide you directly to the monster, and eventually even show you its location and status on the map! Keep researching monsters you hunt often to make those hunts much easier.
Think of it this way: Research Level is your general knowledge about monsters, while Scoutfly Level is your specific, up-to-date intel on a particular beast.
Finally, let's unlock online play! Head over to the Lift and find the Squad Manager. They'll tell you that the Gathering Hub (also called the Celestial Pursuit) is now open. This is your online social space where you can join or create Squads (groups of up to 16 players, and you can be in up to 8 squads). Playing with friends makes Monster Hunter much more fun and way less tedious!
Besides managing your squads, the Squad Manager also points you to the Quest Counter and Arena Counter attendants. From them, you can join or host online quests (it works just like the regular Quest Board) or take on special arena challenges.
Fungal Flexin' in the Ancient Forest
Collect 20 Gourmet Shroomcaps for the Fungal Flexin' quest in monster hunter world. Find Unique Mushroom Colonies in Area 4 of the Ancient Forest.
- 1Your primary objective is to collect twenty Gourmet Shroomcaps. These will count towards your total automatically when harvested and do not take up inventory space.
- 2The Ancient Forest is divided into numbered sections, which appear on your minimap (the small circular map in the bottom-left corner of your screen) and your compass. You must enter an area for its section to be revealed.
- 3Points of interest, including resources and monsters, will be marked on your minimap once you get close enough to spot them.
- 4You can fast travel to discovered camps. Items for quests are found in the Supply Box at camps.
- 5While exploring, be mindful of your Stamina bar. If it depletes, your recovery will be slower. You can hide in foliage by pressing [X]/[A].
- 6Monsters like Aptonoth, Jagras, and Kestodon can be found. Most monsters will leave you alone if you maintain a moderate distance. If a monster's ire is raised, you must fight or flee. The edge of the minimap will glow red when under threat.
- 7Avoid conflict with larger, more dangerous monsters such as the Pukei Pukei (frequents AREA 4) and Great Jagras (found in AREA 3 and AREA 4). They are not terribly aggressive if you avoid getting too close or staying near them too long.
- 8Researching monsters involves being near them or in areas they frequent. Scoutflies will guide you to signs of their passage (scrape marks, tracks, sheddings, etc.) when you are near a monster you can research.
- 9The Gourmet Shroomcaps you need are most easily found along the northwestern edge of AREA 4.
- 10Look for three Unique Mushroom Colonies. Each has a good chance of dropping a Gourmet Shroomcap and can be harvested multiple times.
- 11If you encounter large monsters while in AREA 4, be wary and flee if they attack.
- 12Once all three Unique Mushroom Colonies have been expended, wait a few minutes and return. They should have respawned.
- 13Continue harvesting from the colonies until you have collected twenty Gourmet Shroomcaps.
- Aptonoth can be hunted for meat and will not fight back. Jagras and Kestodon will fight.
- Claim the First-aid Meds from the Supply Box to avoid using your own healing items.
- If you need to wait for the Unique Mushroom Colonies to respawn (be brought back to life at a checkpoint after death), you can explore other areas, gather materials, or hunt smaller game.
