Learn about Tempered Monsters in Monster Hunter: World! Discover their threat levels, which monsters have tempered versions, and how to find them via investigations.
Alright, so you've heard about these tougher versions of monsters, right? They're called Tempered monsters, and they're basically beefed-up versions of the ones you've already fought. They're sorted into three Threat Levels, and generally, the monsters you fought earlier in the game are Threat Level 1. Anything you ran into around the First Wyverian Ritual or later during the main story is usually Threat Level 2. And yep, all those Elder Dragons? They're Threat Level 3.
It's important to know that not every monster in the game gets a Tempered version. Some just don't have them, or maybe they're too iconic to mess with! The table below shows you which monsters fall into which Threat Level, and also lists some that don't have Tempered versions at all.
| Threat Level | Monster |
| 1 | Anjanath, Barroth, Jyuratodus, Paolumu, Pukei-Pukei, Radobaan, Rathian, Tobi-Kadachi |
| 2 | Azure Rathalos, Bazelgeuse, Black Diablos, Diablos, Lavasioth, Legiana, Odogaron, Pink Rathian, Rathalos, Uragaaan |
| 3 | Kirin, Kushala Daora, Nergigante, Teostra, Vaal Hazak |
| N/A | Dodogama, Great Girros, Great Jagras, Kulu-Ya-Ku and Tzitzi-Ya-Ku, Xeno’Jiiva, Zorah Magdaros |
You'll stumble upon Tempered monsters in a few optional quests and assignments, but the main way you'll be hunting them is through Investigations. To even get these investigations to pop up, you'll need to head out on Expeditions and find the tracks of these Tempered beasts. Don't worry, they're pretty easy to spot because the special blue Scoutflies will highlight them. It can take a while to find enough tracks, but there's a neat trick to speed things up! If you craft the Hunter’s Headgear α, you'll get the Scholar skill and Scoutfly Range Up. This makes finding those tracks way easier, so definitely consider getting that gear!
