Alfyn, the Apothecary

Hey there! So, you're diving into Alfyn's story in Octopath Traveler? Let's get you through his first chapter in Clearbrook. Before we jump into the main quest, there are a couple of really powerful weapons you can snag, but fair warning: they're a pain to steal. We're talking a 3% steal rate, so get ready for some save-scumming if you're determined!

First off, head towards the western exit of town. You'll see a granddaughter blocking a doorway. To get past her and into the house, you'll need to use H'aanit's 'Provoke' ability. It's a Strength fight, but she's weak to swords, so Linde can help out if you have her. Once you've dealt with her, make sure Therion is in your party. Inside the house, there's an old man who has two axes you can steal: the Argent Axe and the Golden Axe. The Golden Axe is the better of the two, but honestly, both are fantastic. Whether you manage to steal them or not, when you're ready to officially start Alfyn's chapter, just chat with him near the equipment shop.

Alfyn's all about medicines, being an apothecary. After tending to a patient, he'll visit his mother's grave and meet up with his best friend, Zeph, who's also an apothecary. Things take a turn when Zeph's little sister gets bitten by something venomous. To figure out what happened, Alfyn starts asking around town.

This is where Alfyn's unique Path Action, 'Inquire,' comes in handy. It's a lot like Cyrus' 'Scrutinize,' but here's the good news: it never fails! You might run into a level requirement, though, just like other 'Noble' actions. There aren't tons of people to Inquire with in town, but you can get a discount at the inn from the woman by the western exit, and find a hidden item or two. The key person for the story is the woman in front of Zeph's house – you'll know her by the green speech bubble.

Thanks to Lily, Nina's friend, you'll learn that a blotted viper is the culprit. To make an antidote, you'll need the original venom, which means a trip to the Cave of Rhiyo. So, gear up Alfyn with some items before heading out the eastern exit to the Path of Rhiyo. Oh, and a quick tip: you might want to grab the chest inside Zeph's house while you're there – it contains an Iron Axe. Just be aware that Zeph might block the door, and he can be a tough fight if you try to 'Provoke' him at this stage.

Before you head into the cave, make sure you stock up at the Provisioner. Grab plenty of Herbs of Healing, as you'll need them for the upcoming boss. It's also a good idea to pick up some Soothing Dusts, Essence of Grapes, and Noxroots. You'll be facing a viper nest, so being prepared is key!
