Law Enforcement Basics: Committing crimes near police attracts attention, resulting in a Wanted Rating shown by stars in the upper right corner. A police car icon also appears.

Disabling Police Vehicles: You can disable police vehicles by ramming them or causing them to crash or go into water. This places an 'X' on the police car icon and helps reduce your Wanted Rating. Shooting them increases the Wanted Rating.

Pursuit Level vs. Wanted Rating: Disabling police vehicles reduces the star rating but not the pursuit level. You still face the initial pursuit intensity until the stars are significantly reduced.

Evading Police: When the radar flashes red and blue, you are in sight. At a 1-Star Wanted Rating, you can hide to stop the flashing and wait for the stars to flash, indicating you are on probation. Avoid further crimes during this time to prevent the full Wanted Rating from reappearing.

On-Foot Police: Cops on foot may try to yank you from your car. Drive away quickly to avoid this. If they succeed, you'll be Busted. On foot, they will try to beat you down.

Radar Absence: Unlike GTA IV, police do not appear on your radar.

Inconsistency: Police reactions can be inconsistent; sometimes minor contact results in a Wanted Rating, while other times significant collisions go unnoticed.

Pay 'N' Sprays: These can be used to change your vehicle's appearance and remove Wanted Ratings, but the swarming police make them more challenging to use.

Getting Rid of Wanted Ratings: Besides disabling vehicles and using Pay 'N' Sprays, you can get rid of Wanted Ratings by:

• Getting Wasted (dying).

Saving your game at a Safehouse.

Starting and quickly canceling a Mission Replay.

Doing a Rampage or most Odd Jobs.

Wanted Ratings Explained: There are six levels, with increasing aggression:

• 1-Star: Police chase on foot and in cars. You can hide to make the rating disappear.

2-Star: Police pursuit intensifies; they shoot when you're on foot. Hiding is ineffective. Entering water attracts Coast Guard Launches with powerful guns.

3-Star: NOOSE (National Office Of Security Enforcement) gets involved, using Micro-SMGs and Enforcers. A Police Maverick helicopter will hover and shoot. Blockades and spike strips are deployed.

4-Star: The FIB (Federal Investigation Bureau) joins, driving FIB Ranchers and carrying agents. This is the highest Wanted Rating described in the source.
