Learn how to beat Ultima Risen in final fantasy xvi. This guide details all of Ultima Risen's attacks, including Spinning Dash, The Rapture, and Purgatorium.

You will be controlling Ifrit Risen for this fight, which is the same form you had during the battle with Bahamut. The increased mobility will be sorely needed in this battle, as Ultima Risen will have plenty of attacks that can be quite annoying to dodge. It also doesn’t help that the background is a bit distracting, too, making it difficult to discern some of his moves. Playing defensively is a good idea at first, until you start learning the timing of the various moves and can dodge them reliably.

Walkthrough
  1. 1
This battle is pretty standard, with there being two distinct phases. The first phase has a lot of attacks, then once you stagger him for the first time, you will start seeing some new moves being added to Ultima’s arsenal.
  2. 2
Spinning Dash: Ultima will dash straight at you while spinning. Dodge accordingly.
  3. 3
Double Claw Combo: Ultima will do a quick slash with his claws, then follow that up with a double claw slash in an X-pattern. Be prepared for this potential move after the Spinning Dash, and dodge accordingly.
  4. 4
Scratch Melee Combo: Ultima will have a four-hit combo where he tries to melee you with his claws. The first strike can be initiated by a quick dash. Each subsequent strike is delayed a bit, so you’ll need to dodge/block each hit.
  5. 5
Projectile Combo: Ultima will teleport away, then fire a mass of small projectiles that track you. You’ll need to dodge carefully. He also fires a big ball of energy, which is easier to dodge. He might do the reverse, with the big ball first, then the smaller projectiles.
  6. 6
Energy Dash: Ultima has another dash maneuver, which is slightly different to the Spinning Dash. He surrounds himself with some energy, making it a little harder to dodge.
  7. 7
Circle of Orbs: After the Energy Dash, Ultima will usually release a bunch of energy orbs that circle around him for a few seconds before disappearing. Avoid getting hit by these.
  8. 8
Smite: Ultima will charge up some energy, then teleport next to you to fire a large beam.
  9. 9
Antistrophe: Ultima seems to do two beams in a row. In between the two beams, he appears to do a close-up explosion attack. Wait until the second beam to get back to your offense.
  10. 10
Aureola: Ultima will unleash a bunch of rings that cover (press the cover button to crouch behind walls or objects) a large portion of the area. Some rings likely won’t even hit you.
  11. 11
The Rapture: After you stagger Ultima Risen for the first time, he will immediately use this move. This is similar to the Ultima attack from the previous fight, where he will create a huge wall of energy that starts from him and moves outward. Use Wildfire to move as quickly as possible away from him as soon as the first stagger ends. He will also use this after other staggers.
  12. 12
Stellar Xyston: After the first stagger, Ultima begins by firing two large beams from his arms to his sides. While the beams are active, he will spin around, attempting to hit you with the beams. You won’t be able to outrun the beams, so you will need to learn the timing of your dodge to go through them.
  13. 13
Purgatorium: This special move begins at around 50% health, with the purple bar replacing his normal health. While this is charging, Ultima will perform a number of moves on you, including Stellar Xyston, sending out orbs, and shooting volleys of small projectiles. As the countdown timer depletes, he will start doing bigger moves, like a huge array of beams that he’ll rotate around his center in various directions.
Tips
  • The background can be distracting, making it difficult to discern some of Ultima Risen's moves.
  • Playing defensively at first is a good idea until you learn the timing of the various moves.
  • The Spinning Dash is an easy dash move to dodge.
  • Be prepared for the Double Claw Combo to happen right after the Spinning Dash.
  • Each strike in the Scratch Melee Combo is delayed a bit, so you won’t get hit by others if you dodge the first.
  • The big ball of energy in the Projectile Combo is much easier to dodge than the small projectiles.
  • The Circle of Orbs attack comes right after the Energy Dash, so don't get caught trying to attack.
  • Smite is the same exact move as the previous fight, but without the knock-up and a second beam.
  • Wait until the second beam in Antistrophe to get back to your offense.
  • Aureola is probably one of Ultima’s least threatening attacks.
  • Use Wildfire to quickly get away from Ultima and The Rapture as soon as the first stagger ends.
  • You won’t be able to outrun Stellar Xyston, so you need to learn to dodge through it.
  • Purgatorium is similar to the special attack in Barnabas’ fight.
  • The battle against Ultima Risen is a key part of the story progression in Chapter 5.
