Learn how to defeat the Knight of the Dying Sun in Final Fantasy XVI's 'The Hunter and the Hunted' main quest. Get tips on his attacks and phases.

Walkthrough
  1. 1
You'll start this encounter with Cid by your side, which is a huge help! He'll draw the attention of the Imperial War Aevis, so your main focus should be the Knight of the Dying Sun. If you want to make sure the Aevis stays off your back, you can even pepper it with magic from a distance. The Aevis will mostly ignore you if you keep your distance, but if you get too close, you might get caught in its attacks.
  2. 2
The Knight of the Dying Sun is essentially a miniboss here, using many of the same moves you saw from the Knight of the Blinding Dawn in the prologue. Expect to see Jump, Lance Thrust, Spin Shockwave, and the Jump and Spin Combo.
  3. 3
When the Knight's health drops to about two-thirds, he'll start using Double Jump instead of his regular Jump. It's exactly what it sounds like – he'll jump twice!
  4. 4
Once his health is down to one-third, he enters his final phase. This is where things get really dangerous with his 'Mirage Drive' attack. He'll perform a series of rapid Jumps, and the ground will be covered in fake targeting reticles. It's hard to tell where he'll actually strike! Your best bet here is to just keep running around the arena. You can't really attack him effectively during this, so your only option is to dodge until Cid gets involved and knocks him out of the sky. This will give you a free stagger, and the fight will be pretty much over.

After the Battle:

  1. Once the Knight is defeated, you'll see some cutscenes. After they're done, head back to The Hideout.
  2. Go up to the Infirmary to trigger another scene.
  3. After that, you'll need to speak with Charon and Gav. More cutscenes will follow.
  4. You'll gain a new companion and a new objective. To finish this quest, you need to travel to the Three Reeds on the world map.
  5. Before you head out, you can pick up two new side quests: 'A Place for Everyone' and 'Moving Heaven and Earth'. You can also buy or craft new gear, but honestly, you'll be getting better equipment for free soon, so you might want to save your gil and resources for now.
  6. When you're ready, make your way to the Three Reeds to kick off the next main quest, 'Homecoming'.
