Prepare for Director Clavell's challenging Pokemon battle in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet! Learn his team's weaknesses and the best counters to secure victory.
Alright, so you've taken down all five Team Star bosses, and now Director Clavell himself is waiting for you right in front of the academy. You can take him on whenever you're ready during the day.
Clavell's got a pretty diverse team of six Pokémon, so you'll want to come prepared with the right counters and some healing items. Grabbing a few Full Restores beforehand wouldn't be a bad idea, just in case.
Clive’s Team & Weaknesses
Here's a look at his lineup and what works best against each:
| Pokemon | Level | When He Uses It |
| Oranguru | 60 | Staple. |
| Abomasnow | 60 | Staple. |
| Gyarados | 60 | If you have Quaquaval or Meowscarada. |
| Houndoom | 60 | If you have Skeleridge or Quaquaval. |
| Amoonguss | 60 | If you have Meowscarada or Skeleridge. |
| Skeleridge, Meowscarada, or Quaquaval | 61 | Opposite of Your Starter. |
First up is Oranguru, a Normal/Psychic type. Watch out for its Light Screen, which can weaken your attacks, and Yawn, which will put your Pokémon to sleep. If you can, use a Bug or Dark-type Pokémon to take it down quickly.
Next is Abomasnow, an Ice/Grass type. It likes to use Wood Hammer, which hits hard and has recoil, and Aurora Veil to reduce incoming damage. Blizzard is also a threat. Thankfully, a fire-type Pokémon can make short work of Abomasnow.
Then you might face Houndoom, a Dark/Fire type. It can poison you and has moves like Thunder Fang and Fire Blast. It's generally well-rounded, but a water-type move is its main weakness. If your Pokémon isn't fast enough to dodge Thunder Fang, consider using a Ground, Rock, or Fighting-type Pokémon.
Gyarados, the Flying/Water type, has a big weakness: electric-type moves will absolutely wreck it. Just be careful, as it does have Earthquake and can lower your attack stat when it enters battle. Bring your fastest Electric-type Pokémon for this one.
Amoonguss, a Grass/Poison type, can be tricky with status effects. However, it's easily dealt with using Fire, Psychic, Flying, or Ground-type Pokémon.
Clavell’s Tera Pokémon
The last Pokémon Clavell sends out will be the starter Pokémon that's the opposite of yours, and he'll Terastallize it. Here's what each starter is weak against:
| Pokemon | Weakness |
| Skeleridge | Water, Dark, Ground, Rock, and Ghost. |
| Meowscarada | Fire, Fairy, Poison, Ice, and Bug. |
| Quaquaval | Grass, Electric, Flying, Psychic, and Fairy. |
Remember to bring a good mix of Pokémon to cover these types, and don't forget those healing items!
