Learn the basics of Bravely Second's battle system, including Brave, Default, and Abilities, as you navigate the world map between Gathelatio and Pilgrim's Grove.

Walkthrough
  1. 1
Upon exiting Gathelatio, you will be on the world map between Gathelatio and Pilgrim's Grove.
  2. 2
Study the tutorial windows that appear, especially if you are new to the Bravely series.
  3. 3
Encounter random enemies on the world map and use these battles to practice the battle system.
  4. 4
Understand the basic battle commands: Attack, Ability, Item, and Run.
  5. 5
Learn about the Brave and Default commands: Brave allows multiple actions in one turn by expending Brave Points (BP), while Default forfeits a turn to gain BP and reduce damage taken.
  6. 6
When encountering a new enemy, use the Freelancer's "Examine" ability (or a Magnifying Glass item if Miscellany is not assigned) to reveal its weaknesses, family type, HP, and MP.
  7. 7
For early-game enemies like Applings, Slimes, Goblins, Rabbies, Zombies, and Great Bats, a strategy of Braving four times with Yew and/or Janne can achieve a one-turn victory.
  8. 8
Before leaving the world map, head to the north-west corner to find a hidden Potion.
  9. 9
Proceed to Pilgrim's Grove via the forest path to the far east of the world map.
Tips
  • Jobs are specialized roles that characters can assume, each with its own strengths and weaknesses. As you progress, you will acquire new jobs.
  • Characters level up their jobs by winning battles, gaining new abilities as their job level increases.
  • Abilities are divided into Command Abilities (used in battle) and Support Abilities (passive buffs that must be manually set).
  • The "Attack" command allows characters to use their equipped weapons to inflict damage.
  • The "Ability" command accesses Command Abilities, which can have various effects and costs (MP, BP, etc.). Early characters have "Miscellany" (Freelancer), Nikolai has "Holy Magic", and Janne has "Swordplay".
  • The "Item" command allows the use of items and also provides an opportunity to change equipment for the right and left hand.
  • The "Run" command attempts to escape battle; if one character escapes, all do. A Teleport Stone guarantees escape. You cannot flee from bosses.
  • After selecting actions for all characters, press "Go" to confirm and begin the turn. You can revise choices before pressing "Go".
  • Character action order in a turn is determined by their Speed stat.
  • Characters reaching 0 HP are Knocked Out (KO'd). If all player characters are KO'd, it's Game Over.
  • Brave Points (BP) normally start at 0 and increase by 1 at the start of each turn. Each action expends 1 BP.
  • Characters can perform up to 4 actions per turn by spending up to 4 BP. Braving expends BP, potentially leading to negative BP if actions exceed current BP.
  • Defaulting forfeits the current turn, increasing BP by 1 (up to a maximum of 3) and reducing incoming damage.
  • Enemies can also use Brave and Default commands, but not in the early stages of the game.
  • The game monitors the HP and MP of all enemies of the same type after one has been examined.
