Master the Pokemon Emerald Battle Palace! Learn how Pokemon natures affect move choices, discover effective strategies against Frontier Brain Spenser, and earn Symbols.
The Battle Palace is arguably the most frustrating area in the Battle Frontier. The primary reason for this is that you cannot manually choose your Pokemon's attacks; instead, their move selection is determined by their nature. To reach the Battle Palace, travel south from the Battle Pyramid and then head west. You will find two buildings, one to the north and one to the south. Enter the southern building.
In the Battle Palace, all moves are categorized into three groups: ATTACK, DEFENSE, and SUPPORT. Attack moves are those that inflict damage, such as Psychic and Thunderbolt. Defense moves are used to boost your Pokemon's stats, like Growth and Amnesia. Support moves either lower the opponent's stats or inflict status conditions, such as Screech or Glare. The effectiveness of these moves is influenced by your Pokemon's nature, indicated by a numerical value:
- 5 = Pokemon's favorite type of move
- 4 = Pokemon likes this type of move
- 3 = Pokemon is neutral with this type of move
- 2 = Pokemon doesn't like this type of move
- 1 = Pokemon's least favorite type of move

It is recommended to choose a Pokemon with a nature that favors attack moves to expedite battles. After defeating seven consecutive trainers, you will earn Battle Points. Upon clearing the Battle Palace three times in a row, you will face the Frontier Brain, Spenser.
First Encounter with Spenser
Spenser's Pokemon:
- Crobat (Poison/Flying)
- Slaking (Normal)
- Lapras (Water/Ice)
Crobat is exceptionally fast; counter it with your fastest Psychic-type Pokemon, or use Rock or Electric-type attacks. Be wary of its Toxic and Double Team moves. Slaking possesses immense attack power but can only attack every other turn due to its Truant ability. A strong Fighting-type Pokemon is effective against it. The same Fighting-type Pokemon can also handle Lapras, but it's advisable to also have an Electric or Grass-type Pokemon. Defeating Spenser for the first time awards the Silver Spirits Symbol.
Second Encounter with Spenser
After clearing the Battle Palace six times consecutively, you will face Spenser again. His Pokemon team will be:
- Arcanine (Fire)
- Slaking (Normal)
- Suicune (Water)
Use Water or Ground-type Pokemon to quickly defeat Arcanine. Again, a Fighting-type Pokemon is effective against Slaking. For Suicune, which has high Defense and Special Defense, use your strongest attacks to eventually overcome it. Defeating Spenser for the second time earns you the Golden Spirits Symbol.
