Master the Battle Arena in Pokemon Emerald! Learn about its unique rules, scoring system, and strategies to defeat Greta and earn valuable Guts Symbols.

Hey there! So, you've made it to the Battle Arena, huh? It's a pretty unique spot, located just north of the Battle Palace. What makes it special is that you don't actually need to knock out your opponent's Pokémon to win. Pretty wild, right?

Just like other facilities, you'll need to register your three Pokémon beforehand. A heads-up: you can't swap Pokémon mid-battle here, and moves like Baton Pass, Roar, and Whirlwind are a no-go. You've only got three turns to take down the opponent's Pokémon. If you can't manage that, a judge steps in to decide the winner based on three categories, each worth 2 points. Ties in a category give both you and your opponent 1 point. If it's a total tie (6-6), both Pokémon faint!

  • Mind: Stay on the offensive and keep attacking to rack up points here.
  • Skill: Using your strongest moves that deal a lot of damage will boost your rating.
  • Body: If your Pokémon has more health left than your opponent's, you'll snag this point.

Beat seven trainers in a row, and you'll earn Battle Points. Keep clearing the Battle Arena four times consecutively, and you'll get to face the Frontier Brain, Greta!

Greta's First Battle Team:

  • Heracross (Bug/Fighting)
  • Umbreon (Dark)
  • Shedinja (Bug/Ghost)

Watch out for Heracross's Megahorn – it can be devastating! Since it's 4x weak to Flying, a Flying-type Pokémon is your best bet. If you don't have one, Fire or Psychic moves might work. Umbreon is a real pain with its high defenses and annoying moves like Confuse Ray and Body Slam. Your best bet here is to go all out offensively for three turns, aiming to finish with more health. Fighting or Bug moves could help take it down. Shedinja is tricky because of its Wonder Guard ability, meaning only super-effective attacks hit it. Bring a Fire, Rock, Flying, Ghost, or Dark-type Pokémon to knock it out in one hit.

Defeating Greta the first time earns you a Silver Guts Symbol. Nice!

After you've cleared the Battle Palace eight times in a row, you'll face Greta again.

Greta's Second Battle Team:

  • Umbreon (Dark)
  • Gengar (Ghost/Poison)
  • Breloom (Grass/Fighting)

For Umbreon, it's the same strategy as before: go offensive and try to win within three turns. Gengar is fast and hits hard with its special attack, so it can take your Pokémon out quickly. Psychic or Dark-type moves are effective here. Gengar's defense is a bit low, so Rock-types can also be useful, but remember it has Levitate, so Earthquake won't work. Breloom, being Grass/Fighting, is another prime target for Flying attacks. Ice, Fire, and Psychic moves will also do the job nicely.

Beat Greta a second time, and you'll be rewarded with a Golden Guts Symbol!
